Question ID: 166974
What government funding does Northwest Missouri State University get?

Request for Question Clarification by omnivorous-ga on 25 Feb 2003 11:49 PST
State government funding is fairly easy to obtain; federal funding is
split across a large number of programs, some going directly to
students or professors doing research.

Are the state funding numbers sufficient to answer your question?

I need to know exactly how much money NWMS gets besides tuition and
where it comes from. Be that from ferderal or state. I don't want
anything on grants. Numbers would be great, where there coming from
and so on..
your help is greatly needed!
THANKS

Hello dluver-ga

The university’s own Web pages don’t reflect their budget, finance,
funding or endowment information. Digging further, I was able to get
some fairly current information. It’s clear that the university has
been suffering, along with other State educational institutions. I
found some articles in the general press that addressed these
problems. In a Januar 2002 article I found the information you’re
looking for. In fiscal year 2002 the State funded 51% of NMSU’s budget
while student tuition paid almost 40% and the remaining roughly 10%
comes from donations and other dedicated funding sources. You can look
up the school’s Web page to see what are these sources. The reports
from the State of Missouri budget show that funding was cut for Fiscal
year 2003 and consequently tuition was raised. It sounds like the
school is operating under very tough fiscal conditions.

Good luck with your project.

Missouri, Kansas colleges facing stiff tuition increases
The Kansas City Star
Shrinking state support rankles Ray Courter, vice president for
finance and support services at Northwest Missouri State University.
In 1984-85, the state of Missouri paid for about 72 percent of
Northwest's budget, he said, but this year it is paying for about 51
percent. Students' tuition payments now cover almost 40 percent of the
budget, and about 10 percent comes from other sources such as
donations, Courter said. Courter expects the state to cover less than
50 percent of the cost of running Northwest in the next school year.

In 1985, the state paid 70 percent of the school's costs while tuition
made up 28 percent. Today, state money only makes up half of the
budget, with increased tuition bridging the difference.

Dluver --

You can find the STATE funding for Northwest Missouri State at the
Missouri Department of Higher Education site:
http://www.cbhe.state.mo.us/legbudstatus.xls

The $29 million planned for next fiscal year is virtually identical to
the $29.1 million for this fiscal year. This is about $4,500 per
student (graduate and undergraduate students).

Governments fund programs in discrete programs, so finding a total is
sometimes difficult. The State of Missouri may well have a capital
budget that provides the university with money for construction that's
outside the annual operating budget.

I'd suggest using the following Google search strategy to determine
what FEDERAL grants are flowing to the university:
"federal funding" + "Northwest Missouri State"

In addition federal program grants, note that the average
undergraduate at Northwest Missouri State receives $1,835 in federal
grants or loans:
http://www.universities.com/Schools/N/Northwest_Missouri_State_University.asp

There's also an average of $918 per undergraduate in state and local
grants.
