This following statement shows up on my screen, nothing I do will let
the machine go into standyby mode, as far as I know there are no
drivers for these SCSI hardrives. I am running Win 2000Pro. Is there a
solution?
The device driver for the 'SEAGATE ST318436LW SCSI' Disc Device is
preventing the maching from entering standby. Please close all
applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to
update this driver. |

Hi tomstrie-ga,
Since this is a SCSI hard disk, could you provide the name of the
SCSI controller you have installed? Also, what programs do you have
running in the background?
Thanks,

The SCSI controller is a Adaptec AHA-2940U2/U2Wpci SCSI Controller. I
do not believe I have anything running in the background except a
firewall & router(Which I have always had.) I do have C Dilla which
was installed with the stupid Turbotax program, however the problem
started a few weeks after I installed Turbotax.
I have refreshed the drivers for the Adaptec controller to no avail.

Hi Tomstie,
Since the problem occured a few weeks after installation of Turbotax,
you can ignore it as the cause of the problem. What program/s did you
install aside from Turbotax before the problem started? Did you tweak
the system or modified some settings? Please tell us so we can
identify the cause of the problem. Thanks.

I have not installed any new programs before the problem occurred.
However I have noticed the Yamaha CD RW (Model CRW8824s)has been
acting strange, i.e., sometimes it will not recognize the media or
write to it. The following window popped up with the heading "Adaptec
Setup Wizard" with the message:A disc has been inserted that requires
the Adaptec UDF Reader. This setup wizard Adaptec UDF Reader for
Windows 95/Windows NT. Do you wish to continue?
I do not know whether I said yes or no! It was not working this
morning, I removed the CDRW disc in the drive and reinstalled and it
now works. ???????????
I have also noticed when I go to the log there are substantial errors
showing regarding the cd RW. I have refreshed the drivers for this
device to no avail.Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Hi tomstrie-ga,
You said that you have a Yamaha CDRW installed. Do you, by any
chance, also have Adaptec/Roxio's CD Writing software installed? This
could include any and all of the following products:
Adaptec DirectCD [DCD]
Easy CD Creator [ECDC]
Roxio Take Two
Adaptec UDF Reader
...besides any other.
Some of the above products are known to cause problems with Windows
Standby/Hibernate feature. If you could tell me which of the above you
have installed, and their version numbers, I will post an answer
detailing the steps you need to take to fix your problem.
Also, did you upgrade to Windows 2000 from an earlier version of
Windows, or is it a clean, new install?

Theta,
Windows was a virgin install on a new machine two years ago.
Adaptec Direct CD is installed, can't find version number.
Easy CD Creator is installed ver 4.05
Take Two is installed,(never used), ver 1.0.3.269
UDF Properties show installed, UDFRINST.EXE 1.0.3.23
I also forgot to mention I installed Stomp Backup My PC and MS Money
2003 Deluxe about 3 weeks ago.
Thanks again for your help, this has been very puzzling to me. This
machine has been wonderful with WIN 2000 PRO up to now.

Hi Tomstrie,
I'm not familiar with the interface of Stomp Backup. Could you please
try disabling it's auto-backup feature (if it has one), restart, and
try settingyour system to standby mode? Thanks.

Hi Tomstrie,
I believe I have narrowed down the problem candidates to the
following two:
- Roxio Take Two : It loads a driver in the background, whether
you use it or not. Try uninstalling all the Adaptec/Roxio programs and
see if the problem reappears.
- Adaptec AHA-2940U2 : This ships with EZ-SCSI 5.x drivers which
are not compatible with Windows 2000. See this Adaptec KnowledgeBase
article:
- Why is EZ-SCSI 5.x, bundled with the SCSI Card, not
Windows 2000 compatible?
(http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/adaptec_tic.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=kalWJWCg&p_lva=&p_faqid=2458&p_created=992566926&p_sp=cF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEwMzYmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1lenNjc2kgMjk0MFUyIHdpbmRvd3MgMjAwMCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9fmFueX4mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT1_YW55fiZwX3NvcnRfYnk9ZGZsdCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=)
- Windows 95/98/NT ASPI Layer (ASPI32.EXE)
( http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/adaptec_tic.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=kalWJWCg&p_lva=&p_faqid=2165&p_created=986497325&p_sp=cF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQ0JnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9ZXpzY3NpIDI5NDBVMiZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9fmFueX4mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT1_YW55fiZwX3NvcnRfYnk9ZGZsdCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=
)
Try to find out if you have installed EZ-SCSI or not. You
can use the utility specified in the above article to find the version
of your ASPI files. You can download the latest updates for your
hardware from :
- AHA-2940U2W Downloads
( http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/AHA-2940U2W
)
Try out the above, and if it helps, I will post it as an answer.

Did uninstalling the Adaptec/Roxio CD Writing apps help? Or
alternatively, did you have EZ-SCSI 5 installed?

Hello Theta,
I have not had a chance to unload the adapatec drivers and cannot find
if I have EZ SCSI. Since this is tax time and I want to finish all my
childrens taxes, I am reluctant to remove the Adaptec at this time
till I am finished because I use the CDRW to store my backup. The CDRW
is working.
You have worked hard on this problem and appreciate it very much. I
think we should close this issue and I will uninstall the Adaptec when
tax time is over. If necessary we will hopefully visit the issue again
if I am unable to get the shutdown/standby issue resolved
Again thanks,

Hi tomstrie-ga,
You may be able to fix the problem by just uninstalling the Take
Two software. Alternatively, you can uninstall all the components and
reinstall the latest version available at Roxio's
website(www.roxio.com).
As for EZ-SCSI, I believe it appears in the Add/Remove Applications
applet in the Control Panel.
Hope this helps.

Theta,
I have removed the Take Two software, now the machine will go into
standby and will not recover or come out of standby, I have to reboot.
However, the message regarding the Seagate SCSI device no longer shows
up.
Any suggestions?

Hi tomstrie-ga,
Congratulations on getting rid of the original problem! Now lets
tackle the second one. :-)
This problem may be related to your old one,or it may have an
entirely different cause. First lets check out Take Two:
- Roxio recommends, on their website, that to uninstall Take Two
completely, you take the following steps:
1. Uninstall the Roxio EZ CD Creator application suite.
2. Reinstall it, but deselect Take Two from the applications
to be installed.(I recommend removing DirectCD too, if you don't use
it)
3. Install the latest updates available for both EZCD Creator
and DirectCD. You can find these at:
- Easy CD Creator 4.x. Software Updates
(
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv4.jhtml )
- Check if the following files, PrdSeqRd.sys or PrdSeqRd.vxd, are
present on your computer. If so, rename them to something else. Reboot
and see if standby works.
- Do you have Iomega Drives or Roxio's GoBack software installed.
These are known to prevent Win2K from recovering from Standby in some
cases.
- Check out the solutions outlined in the following MS
KnowledgeBase articles for solving problems with Windows 2000's
StandBy feature.
- How to Troubleshoot Problems with Standby Mode...
)
Again, EZCDC v4 and 5 both have various issues with Windows 2000.
See the following Google Groups posting for some of the problems users
faced, and their solutions:
- Subject: ECDC 4.02e - DCD3.01e - Roxio - Adrian Miller
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win2000.general
( http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&th=3abf7171dad79582&rnum=1&prev=/&frame=on
)
You could try downloading and using version 6, which is much more
compatible with Win2K and XP. I can also quite confidently recommend
Nero Burning ROM ( www.nero.com ) as an alternative.
Please try out the steps detailed above and see if they help.
If you need any clarifications, just ask.
Regards,
Theta-ga

Theta,
Thanks for your help. Along with your help and other things I did to
correct the standby issue everything has been resolved, standby works,
no challenging statements on the screen, etc.
I also purchased and installed the latest version of Roxio Easy Cd and
DVD 6 which I am sure corrected a lot of problems.
I will now close the issue.
Thanks again
