Select colleges, universities, and churches and cathefrals all over
the world have music departments that use harpsichords in the
performance of early as well as modern music on a quite regular basis.
I am looking to find one of them that would be interested in
purchasing this fine instrument that I must now sell. I know that
there is a long waiting list for such instruments and the Sabathil &
Sons French Doulble Harpsichord (1980)that I own going for $12,500.00
is a bargain. I need email contacts with schools, churches with music
departments that might be interested. I don't know how much research
would be necessary to identify what schools, churches might fit this
catagory, but I would be willing to start out with $100 after hearing
from someone who might let me know how complicated my search might be
to find that institution. I will be available after about 11am today
to spend whatever time on the computer with whoever is doing the
research. If it would be helpful to you, I can send you an email
attachment with a picture with all the information about the
instrument. |

hello jrussell:
Thanks for the facinating question.
I would love to help you out on this quest, but there are several
questions I need to ask you first.
1. Where are you located? If we can find a buyer closer to you that
will save costs. There's no point finding a buyer in Australia, if you
are in Boston. :-)
2. Are you adamant that your buyer come from a
church/university/college? Would an non-institutional buyer suffice?
3. Are you willing to work through an instrument broker? These
services typically take a commission for sales - but have access to a
much broader client-base.
4. What timelines are you looking at to sell this instrument? Are you
in a hurry? That could affect the price you'll get and the available
methods for selling it.
5. Do you have a bottom-line price you will not go under?
It would also be helpful to have the picture and other information
about your harpsichord. However, Google Answers Researchers are not
allowed to get in direct contact with our clients - everything must be
one through the website. Is there any website that you have access to
where you can post thhis information? If so, please do and then post
the URL(s) here in a Clarification.
Looking forward to helping you out here.
websearcher-ga
P.S. Until these questions (and maybe others) are answered, it is
difficult to say whether $100 is a "fair" price for this question.
However, I think it is in the right ballpark.

Thanks for getting started on my question. Here are the answers you
have requested:
1. I live in Los Angeles California
2. Not at all - non-institutional buyer would be fine
3. Only to the extent that it might be 19% or less.
4. Yes, - the sooner the better.
5. $10,000 - maybe less
6. Picture of instrument can be seen after 12pm 02.27.03 on website
http://www.allsoulscc.org, but I will have to give you some kind of
guide in the morning (02.27.03)after I have set this up.
Thanks websearcher-ga. Do you have a name?

Hi jrussell:
Thanks for the clarifications! Having the answers to these questions
is extremely helpful.
Here is what I propose to do to help you sell your harpsichord.
1. Provide you with contact and submission information for about 5 -
10 instrument brokers that deal in harpsichords, work for less than
19% commission, and also seem most professional. (I've already started
finding these, so this should happen today.)
2. Provide you with contact information for about 10 - 20
universities/colleges as close to you as possible that have
harpsichord programs. I will try to find you the best person to
contact about selling your instrument at each school. (I've already
started this one as well, so this should happen today as well.)
3. Provide you with 5 - 10 churches in your area that might have
interest in your harpsichord. This may take me a while to complete, as
I expect it to be a tricky search.
4. Provide you with any other possible contacts I can come up with in
the meantime.
How does that sound?
Thanks.

Hi jrussell:
Here is the *first* installment of your answer.
Harpsichord Brokers
Instrument brokers tend to work either on a flat rate fee or a
commission basis. While I was able to find several brokers that listed
harpsichords, only *one* such broker had the quality, volume,
location, and professionalism you will require for your sale. All the
others were either very small, not focused on quality harpsichords,
out of the country, or charging huge commissions.
Broker: The Harpsichord Clearing House, MA
URL: http://www.harpsichord.com/index.html
Brokerage Details:
"Feel confident entrusting your early keyboard instrument to a company
with over 32 years of experience. Since 1969 we have been actively
listing early keyboard instruments thoroughout the world. To date we
have handled nearly two thousand instruments. Our brokerage services
include Listing and Consignment."
They charge 15% commission on listings where you keep the instrument
until sold. They also work on consignment, where they take the
instrument in an refurbish it - but then they charge 25%. Details at:
http://www.harpsichord.com/Services/serv_main.html
Since they are in MA, I would suggest considering the listing option.
Similar Instruments: They have dozens of double harpsichords for sale
(many in your target price range) as well as one single Sabathil &
Sons. See them at: http://www.harpsichord.com/List/list_frmset.html
Contact Information:
http://www.harpsichord.com/Contact%20page/cont_frmset.html
Have a close look around their site and see whether you want to go in
that direction or not. This may be something you want to consider
*after* you contact the schools/churches I find for you first.
I apologize that there were not as many of these quality brokerages as
I thought there would be (5 - 10). I'll try to find you more schools
and churches to compensate.
Next Installment: Univeristies/Colleges to contact.
Thanks for your patience.

Hey Websearcher (with that name I feel like I am talking to an alien
from outerspace - I suppose that cyber space might qualify)
Thank you so much for results so far. On my end I will try to place a
pic of the harpsichord on the website I sent to you yesterday
(Http://www.allsoulscc.org)by noon today. I will emial how to
navigate from there.
Answers to four points.
1. 19% commission is too high. Perhaps 12% but perhaps also more
likely 15%.
2. Wonderful
3. Episcopal churches in wealthy areas all over California.
4. Wonderful
All of this sounds fine. In the meantime I will go directly to the
URLs that you have suggested. I will let you know if I have any
results.
I am hoping that there is no time limit to our working together about
all of this. If I work closely with you moving ahead immediately with
what you have come up with, will that be satisfactory?
Again thank you for your interest and attention, by cyber alien
websearcher friend (I'l bet you've never been called that before!)

Hi Jim:
Thanks for the recent update. :-)
Sometimes I must admit I feel a little bit like an alien - existing
here in cyber-space. ;-)
There is no time-limit on our collaboration. I'm happy to continue
working with you until you get the instrument sold. If you need to
take a day/week to investigate links I've sent you, that's no problem
at all. Just place a Clarification Request (like your last one) when
you need to get my attention and I'll get an email alerting me.
There is also no time pressure on my end of the stick. You set the
pace - I'll work to that.
You are quite right, in my 250+ questions, I've never been called a
"cyber alien
websearcher friend"!
I am almost ready to send you my list of schools + contacts. Should be
here in an hour or so.
Your friend.

Hi Jim:
Here is the *second* installment of your answer.
Universities/Colleges to Contact
I have search through many, many schools with music programs in order
to find what appear to be the most promising 16 opportunities for you
to sell your harpsichord. I have also tried to find the right person
to contact at each school. If they can't give you a yes/no, then they
can at least point you to the right person who can.
I chose the schools by making sure they either had a harpsichord
program, or a keyboard program that focused on the harpsichord, or
said that they have several harpsichords for students to use/perform
on. (There were nowhere near as many of these schools in CA as I
thought there would be!)
Here they are, more or less ordered by distance from where you are.

Hi Jim:
Here is the *third* installment of your answer.
Episcopal Churches in California
To find this initial list of possibilities, I found a listing of the
episcopal churches of California at:
Episcopal Church Congregations Web Site
URL: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/webpages/p8.html#California
and then I cross-referenced it with results of searches for:
episcopal california harpsichord
://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=episcopal+california+harpsichord&meta=
I came up with the following short list of churches that definitely
are "into" the harpsichord. I have provided the site where I found
mention of the connection, as well as any contact information for the
church I could find.
St. James Episcopal Church, La Jolla

Try these three chruches out and let me know if I'm on the right track
in my search strategy. :-)
Thanks.
