Hello ocphog2-ga,
Ive researched what it takes to prepare for the ASVAB test and how to
find an effective private tutor for you. There are several issues that
need to be discussed in evaluating test preparation products and
services and then developing criteria for choosing the one that will
help you. In conducting the research I came to the conclusion that the
information can be categorized to help you work through your options
step-by-step.
=================================
THE ASVAB AND AFQT WHAT AND WHY
=================================
I found some excellent resources that help you with preparing for the
ASVAB that explain how the various parts fit together and how the test
is used. The ASVAB is a recruiting tool that is offered through high
schools, community services and other locations. It has a long history
with the military services. It was developed to help the military
services test and assign recruits who could meet the minimum
requirements for intellectual capacity, especially with math and
verbal skills, and then assign them to suitable military job
specialties. Through the years, the ASVAB has also been adapted for
use in high school career guidance for helping students discover
career preferences and help guide them with career choices.
In military recruiting there is a subsection of the ten part test that
is crucial for your acceptance by the military. Its called the AFQT
and the four sections of it are: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics
Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph comprehension. Your score is
determined through a complex formula but it serves as the basic
screening tool for getting into the military. The other parts of the
ASVAB battery are used for choosing the best fit for you military
specialty.

All About the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery
This site offers an excellent explanation of ASVAB, military
recruiting and offers many helpful links.

What is the ASVAB?
The ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude test battery consisting of ten
subtests on various subjects. The ten subtests that comprise the
ASVAB, each covering a different subject area and each carefully
timed, follow:
The ASVAB is used for two main purposes:
· As a military recruiting tool that the U.S. Department of Defense
uses to test potential recruits to determine their developed abilities
(that is, to gauge what they already know about certain subjects); to
measure their general learning ability and vocational aptitude; and to
predict performance in certain academic areas.
· As a guide for high school and post-secondary school students, to
help them decide on the career paths for which they might best be
suited, whether in the military or in some other field.
Most sections of the ASVAB depend on your knowing about the subject
from your high school courses or other reading.

How important is this test?
Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word
Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see
below) -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT)
score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in
the U.S. military. Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB
determine how qualified you are for certain military specialties.
Score high, and your chances of getting the specialty/job you want
increase.
So how does the test "count"? Even though no one passes or fails the
ASVAB, your scores are important if you're trying to get into the
military. To be eligible to enlist, you must get a minimum percentile
score on the ASVAB (see below). The minimum score is different for
different military branches -- contact your local recruiter to find
out what score you need.

ASVAB TEST PREPARATION PROGRAMS
===============================
There are lots of resources available for ASVAB test preparation but
tutors dont seem to advertise that they specialize in this test.
There are lots of books, practice tests, and online programs to help
you prepare on your own. I believe that you could ask a tutor who
specializes in academic subjects, especially math and English, and
work with them to develop a program to tutor you on ASVAB preparation
using some of these available printed and online resources.

This course focuses on the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test).
The AFQT is the 1 to 99 score that gets you in to the service and gets
you the bonuses and the better job choices. It is made up of 4
sub-tests that you must score high enough on to be able to enlist the
military.
This course is not a practice test, it is an online study course that
focuses on the 4 sub-tests of the ASVAB; Word Knowledge, Paragraph
Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning that
together make the AFQT. This is the score that determines whether you
can enter the service or not.

Administering the ASVAB is similar to administering any standardized
achievement test. The new ASVAB Career Exploration Program was
developed with input from a panel of career development experts. The
ASVAB Program is free of charge to participating schools. A test
administrator is provided for each test session. This site includes
many materials to help you implement the ASVAB Program at your school.
Be sure to look at the FACT Sheets and Idea Sheets.

VALUE OF TEST PREPARATION AND TUTORING
======================================
There is a lot of controversy over whether test preparation helps or
not in getting ready for college. These same questions apply to the
aptitude tests for the military. Many experts argue that the college
admissions tests measure aptitude and test preparation doesnt help
because the tests measure inborn aptitudes. Other experts counter that
test taking is a special skill and that some of the admissions tests
also measure knowledge and skills. You have to draw your own
conclusions but it seems that being familiar with the testing process
is definitely helpful and that coaching on test-taking skills can make
a difference in your score. If nothing else, it will help you feel
more comfortable about the process. Here is a selection of articles
discussing the merits of test preparation and how to evaluate the
various options.

Study: Test-Preparation Courses Raise Scores Only Slightly
The type of test preparation students choose may have an impact on
their scores, the study found. For example, students with private
tutors were able to improve their scores on the math section of the
SAT on average by 19 points more, on an 800-point scale, than students
who didn't have private tutors. A commercial class had a similar
effect. By contrast, the use of a video to prepare for the SAT showed
no effect on math scores, and the verbal scores of students who had
used the videos even went down.
**** Test preparation might help and the type of help matters. Private
tutoring seems to be helpful.

TUTORS IN ORANGE COUNTY AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
===============================================
I was unable to find any tutors who specialize in the ASVAB but many
tutors offer test preparation services. Most of these are geared to
the SAT and ACT and other college entrance exams but there are some
tutors who help with the GED, the California High School Exit Exam,
and a variety of other tests geared to those leaving high school. In
addition, many tutors offer academic guidance and coaching, especially
in math and language skills. I believe many of them would be able to
help you prepare for improving your ability to take the AFQT whick
concentrates on math and English skills.
