“A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr.
Gheissari completed his internship and residency at Hahnemann
University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His cardiothoracic
surgery residency was completed at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, the
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York
City. It was during this time that he began to focus his attention on
heart transplantation. He returned to Hahnemann University Hospital
where he became director of the Cardiac Transplant Program.
Dr. Gheissari came to the Multi-Organ Transplant Center in 1998 where
he has performed 109 heart transplantation surgeries. In his career,
he has performed 210 heart transplants. With his extensive knowledge
on issues relating to immunosuppression, especially as related to
heart transplantation, he has been able to lecture on transplantation
advances as well as the treatment of heart failure. He also lectures
frequently on many other issues relating to the heart. He continues to
study advancements in all transplant proceedings and has published his
findings in medical journals including The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Gheissari works closely
with the National Institute of Transplantation (NIT), the United
Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) and his fellow surgeons at the
Multi-Organ Transplant Center to discover pioneering techniques that
