Need histories and personal stories of Nevada Wild Mustangs at or
around the Nevada Underground Nuclear Test Site in 1962-3.
Who rounded up mustangs, other animals, tied them close to Ground Zero
to find effects of nuclear radiation? Who was responsible for them,
their habitats?
Need study of these 1962-3 era wild mustang lifestyles,
habits,families or groupings, bands,mating,feeding,activities,rituals,
"biographies": to incorporate into a full length story or screenplay.

Hello.

Is there anything more you can tell researchers about this? Where/how
did you hear about the mustang stories? If you saw it in print, what
was the source?

The test records and details are probably in government archive files,
either those of the old Atomic Energy Commission, which are stored in
College Park, Maryland, or DoD files, which are scattered around the
US.

Any leads would be a help in tracking this down.

Greetings SilverMustang:

My research only generally addresses your query so I am posting my
findings as Comments. Good luck with your screenplay and I hope some
of this information assists you.

I discovered this snippet concerning 1976 alleged germ tests:

"Some mysteries have arisen that critics claim could have been caused
by germ tests. For example, 50 wild horses died mysteriously at Dugway
at Orr Springs in 1976, officially from thirst even though water was
nearby. Critics question if Venezuelan equine encephalitis - which
Dugway used in tests - might have caused their deaths instead."

In the postwar dawn of the nuclear age, when government officials said
atomic testing would guarantee the welfare and security of the nation,
most Americans figured they meant it. But as the 1950s drew to a
close, many discovered they had figured wrong.

In this award-winning documentary, director David L. Brown tells the
harrowing story of the "hidden casualties of the cold war," the
victims of nuclear-weapons testing. But he also celebrates the spirit
of survival, of victims uniting to forge an international movement to
end nuclear testing.

Moving testimonials, expert commentary, and a comprehensive survey of
archival footage and stills demonstrate how the United States and
former Soviet Union repeatedly exposed their citizens to lethal levels
of radiation through atomic tests while lying about its poisonous
effects. Most disturbing is the parade of government officials denying
any public risk and an Atomic Energy Commission propaganda film cast
with recruits from a downwind Utah town where other residents had
raised complaints about livestock and wildlife deaths. Most of the
"actors" have since died of cancer.

Brown interviews engineers who worked in tunnels below the Nevada Test
Site, soldiers assigned to ground-zero duty there, and "downwinders"
in the United States, Pacific Islands, and Kazakhstan. Physicists and
scholars add scientific backbone and historical context to the
victims' often heart-rending stories.

Developed as democracy's defense against tyranny, the film's narrator
explains, nuclear weapons were intended to signal U.S. dominance in
the postwar world order. Newsreel footage illustrates how the Marshall
Islands, a U.S. trust territory, were used to bolster that position:
"American officials discuss plans with the Bikini natives for the
evacuation of the atoll. The islanders are a nomadic group and are
well pleased that the Yanks are going to add a little variety to their
lives." As evidence of the tests' health impacts surfaced in 1954, the
islanders were hit with the largest thermonuclear blast thus far—this
time, without warning. Ever optimistic, AEC Chairman Lewis Strauss
reports, "Four months after the event, the medical staff have advised
us that they anticipate no illness, barring of course diseases which
may hereafter be contracted."

As the wall of secrecy about the bomb's health effects began to
crumble, downwinders worldwide organized. Empowered by glasnost,
Kazakhstanis formed an alliance with U.S. downwinders in 1989. Within
a year, the coalition stopped 11 of 18 planned tests at the
Kazakhstani site and later won a permanent ban on testing there. Their
victories helped pass the U.S. Nuclear Testing Moratorium Act of 1992
and laid the groundwork for negotiating a comprehensive ban.

While the film is a chilling reminder of how easily governments
sacrifice the public trust in the name of national security, it's also
a testament to the changes that people bound by common ground—or in
this case, bound by the wind—can effect.—Liza Gross

MUSIC FILE!!
"In addition to the soldiers, there were animals there that were being
used in the experiments. There were sheep, goats and burros used for
experiments. "The ones above the ground were not there anymore, only
the chains that held them, some of the animals that were below ground
were either dead or had blood running from their nose, ears, and
rectum," Stradley said. "The dust was so thick, you couldn’t see. The
dirt and pebbles were dropping on you and we were supposed to attack
ground zero," Stradley says. As the men charged, they heard radiation
monitors shouting warnings. "They said it was so ‘hot,’ to get out of
there," he says. After running to safety, the men stood in long lines
to remove the radioactive dust from their uniforms. "Decontamination
was some guy standing with a broom brushing the dust off of you and
that was it," Stradley remembers."

From http://radfilms.com/pauling_interview_postscript.htm
"Dr. Linus Pauling's warnings of the increased incidence of cancer due
to the fallout from atmospheric atomic weapons testing & the emissions
of fission reactors were largely ignored by the mainstream media
during his lifetime. Finally, in 1997, 40 years after his petition to
the United Nations was denounced as "pro-communist," the US National
Cancer Institute announced that large numbers of people, especially
children, were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation from fallout.
The damage done by the US, British, & USSR testing until 1963, of
testing by France & China and, more recently, by Pakistan, India, et
al, dispersed vast amounts of long-lived radioactive materials into
the atmosphere. Since much of this consists of elements such as
Iodine, Cesium, Strontium, etc. which falling into the oceans, are
ingested by oceanic organisms such as algae, plankton, etc. &, falling
onto the ground, are taken up by grazing animals such as sheep &
cattle, it becomes increasingly concentrated the higher it goes up the
food chain. While we have until now managed to avoid the catastrophe
of nuclear war, it appears that those responsible for protecting the
security of our respective nations have, in fact, poisoned life on
Earth for thousands of years to come."

"But I-131's steady breakdown means that the amount ofI-131 released
by a bomb test steadily decreased after thetest. Therefore, farm
animals that grazed in fields withina few days after a test would have
consumed higher levels of I-131 than animals grazing later"

From http://www.shundahai.org/nuclear_murder.htm
"In the early 1950s, southern Utah ranchers lost thousands of animals
from radiation poisoning following a particularly dirty test shot.
They sued the government, but during the discovery phase of the trial
AEC officials lied about having reports that documented the radiation
the animals received and testified there was no connection between
fallout and the deaths. The truth came out at another trial 30 years
later.

"Cancer deaths spiked in southern Utah in the mid-1950s. Diseases that
had been nearly nonexistent until then decimated whole families. The
overwhelmed undertaker in Cedar City, Utah, needed special training in
order to prepare the cancer-devastated bodies.

"Simultaneously, Nevada Test Site workers began to develop the same
types of illnesses and die at an alarming rate. AEC again insisted the
workers were safe, that there was no connection between the cancers
and the fallout.
But there was a connection, and AEC knew it. Government records,
finally released after decades of denial and secrecy, show that the
entire country was repeatedly dusted by fallout. Radioactive hot spots
were found as far away as Albany, New York. Public health statistics
showed hundreds of thousands of American babies were killed by fallout
between 1951 and 1966. Another study found SAT scores dropped in Utah
during the testing."

Hi silvermustang-ga,

I am researching your question, unfortunately I have plans this
weekend, so I thought I'd post my preliminary results as a comment. I
have a couple cards up my sleeve that I think will garner the stories
you seek, however I won't be able to give it the time necessary until
Monday at the earliest...

The State Of Nevada has a small area devoted to Wild Mustangs. Three
