I want to know:
1. The number of distinct wines that are produced for sale every year,
then broken out by country of origin. The data I'm looking for is NOT
a liquid measurement of wine sold or area measurement of wine grapes
in production. If Winery X produces 4 different kinds of merlot, that
would count for 4. The thrust of this question is to quantify the
entire range of consumer choices in terms of distinct products.
2. the global number of wine producers by country. Break them out by
state in the USA, but need not break them out elsewhere if it saves
time.
Some background on question #1. The typical statistics that tend to
surface on this issue are: import/export counts in terms of the NUMBER
OF BOTTLES or AMOUNT OF LIQUID or ECONCOMIC VALUE of wine sold,
imported, or exported. I AM NOT INTERESTED in those numbers, and they
are easy to come by. The point of my question is aimed at quantifying
the full range of consumer choices, in terms of distinct separate
variants for sale.
Also, if the answer is not available directly, I am ok relying on
intelligent inference if it can also be backed up with actual cause.
I'm happy to clarify any questions, because I am not after the readily
available production statistics mentioned above.
The point of Q2 above is to get at the 'brand' layer of consumer
choice. Anyone who's been to the wine store knows that Hogue (eg) has
merlot, chardonnay, etc. In this question (Q2), "Hogue" would count
as 1. As you may infer from my purpose in asking the question, I am
not looking to include any wine that is not for sale (e.g. personal or
individual home brewers).
Ideally, the information to answer one question comes from one source,
so that there is not a problem with "Italy says it has 5000 wineries
but [other source] says Italy only has 3000." Possible sources of
data include:
BATF (which regulates all wine sold in USA)
Various US economic sources (dept of Ag?)
University California DAVIS (trains winemakers, studies wine)
??I'm stumped. Thanks!! Take on this one it's fun! I already Google
Answers searched for WINE and found 221 answers none of which relate
to this one. I'm not looking for analysis so much, but a credible
source. If no credible source data on this exists, then we go to
trying to infer it. |
