Hello,

There is almost no information about Louis Cheslock online besides the
fact that he was professor at Peabody Conservatory teaching Harmony in
the 1960's. He died July 19th, 1981. The Peabody Conservatory has
since affiliated with John Hopkins University and inquires made to the
conservatory library may yield a copy of his sheetmusic (they would
definately have a copy). "The collections of the Arthur Friedheim
Library comprise approximately 100,000 volumes including musical
scores, books on music, music journals, sound recordings, videos and
manuscripts." Here is the address:

Arthur Friedheim Library
Peabody Conservatory of Music
1 E. Mt. Vernon Place
Baltimore, MD 21202-2397

I tried calling the conservatory library on your behalf, but they did
not pick up (I have a couple friends at John Hopkins and it is the end
of the semester there, and Summer semester hasn't started so that may
be it). This seems to be the only source of info on this composer
because others have tried (a mailing list inquiry to Cheslock's
sheetmusic is linked below). The Conservatory is your best bet for his
music, although you will probably have to pay some sort of royalty to
receive a copy of the sheetmusic unless you state you are using it for
educational purposes.

Enjoy, and on Monday give the library a call at 410-659-8100 or write
them at the address written above. Good luck!

Hope I could help!

Just thought I'd add this, from the 7/21/81 NY Times:

Louis Cheslock, the last surviving member of H.L. Mencken's Saturday
Night Club, died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 82 years old. Mr.
Cheslock, who spent 60 years on the faculty of the Peabody
Conservatory, composed concertos, tone poems, symphonies, a ballet and
an opera. He was the author of three books, ''H.L. Mencken on Music,''
''Violin Vibrato'' and ''Graded List of Violin Music.''

In 1923 and 1924, he won The Chicago Daily News prize for composition,
and in 1942 he won the National Composers' Clinic contest for choral
arrangements.

During three decades in Baltimore, beginning in the 20's, Mr. Cheslock
was a member of Mencken's Saturday Night Club, a group of raconteurs
who joined the Sage of Baltimore for weekly discussions and to drink
large quantities of beer.
