I need data on the number of scientists and engineers in each state of the U.S.

The National Science Foundation has the most comprehensive statistics
available because they directly give money to colleges and
universities. The statistics of each state are listed separately by
state on the link below and directly answer your question for
doctorate degrees & higher. Statistics for undergraduate work (B.S. &
M.S.) is listed on another site by the government called the National
Center for Educational Statistics but is currently down. If you do a
google search (or click the link below) you'll see from the cached
pages, the info is there but cannot be accessed because their
webserver is currently down. Please bookmark the site and return to it
perhaps later this week. On the gmac.com link I provide, you can read,
"8. Bachelor's, master's, and doctor's degrees conferred by
institutions of higher education". I hope the doctorate information
found at the National Science Foundation will be enough to suffice
until you are able to get the B.S. & M.S. info.
