local CompUSA store had one a week and a half ago but no says they are
not carrying them.

1 – What happened to them?
2 – Where can I find one new? Can I get a better deal now that they
are discontinued?

Hello again sherpaj,

A pleasure to research another question for you.

There appear to be no less than 37 different models of Sony PCG-R505!!
They differ in features such as RAM, hard drive size, processor speed,
etc.

Do have a look at this page at DealTime:

http://www.dealtime.com/xPP-PC_Notebooks~KW-sony_r505~CR-1

I checked and for the models I looked at, there was claimed stock at
the listed vendors.

If you would select a model or two of this laptop, I would be pleased
to continue the research and verify stock and search for the lowest
available price for you.

For example, PriceScan shows multiple configurations of this computer
with pricing here:

http://www.pricescan.com/scripts/Q01010201.asp

Do let me know your choices and any special needs and I will be happy
to follow up and post my additional findings.

Regards,

If you could... that would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the specs: Pentium III-M processor, 1.2 GHz, 256 MB, 30 GB
hard drive, 12.1 in. screen, CD-RW / DVD-ROM.

Even these are flexible. As long as it has at least a 20gig HD, a 1
GHz cpu, and a cd burner. The CD burner is inside the slimdock.

I am more interested in what/where a good deal can be had. Not
concerned about exactly which model of R505. I do need to get it in
the next few days though.

Hello again,

Thanks for the reply.

There are four models that exactly meet your specifications and they
are all identical except for the operating system. The best deal also
seems to be the most logical choice and comes with Windows XP Home
Edition. The other choices are Windows 2000 and XP Professional. I set
out to find the XP Home machine. If I have made an incorrect
assumption that this would be your choice, please do let me know.

The model is the Sony VAIO R505GL SuperSlim Pro (MPN-PCG-R505GL)
Specs are:

   Processor Type Pentium III-M
   Processor Speed 1.2 GHz
   Installed RAM 256 MB
   Hard Drive Capacity 30 GB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
   Motherboard Bus Speed 133 MHz
   Hard Drive Capacity 30 GB
   RAM Type SDRAM
   Maximum RAM 384 MB
   Floppy Drive 3.5" HD
   CD/DVD Type CD-RW / DVD-ROM
   Read Speed 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD)
   Write Speed 16x
   Rewrite Speed 10x
   Display Size 12.1 in.
   Screen Type TFT active matrix
   Max Resolution 1024 x 768
   Modem Type Fax / modem
   Modem Speed 56 Kbps
   Networking Type Network adapter
   Battery Type Lithium ion
   Average Battery Life 4.5 Hour(s)
   Weight 4.41 lb.

Prices at DealTime range from $1350 to $1704 for this model.

Since there is little time for error in your purchase, I passed by
several of the lowest prices and went to the first vendor with a 5
star rating. Even though your credit card online purchases are
guaranteed, with an upcoming trip I would think that reliabiltiy and
receiving your order would be more important than a small savings.
Compute Mobility claims to have stock at $1469

http://www.computemobility.com/frameset.cgi?finditem+laptop+Sony+PCG-R505GL+dealtime+2%2f27%2f2003-23%3a16+2

Unfortunately, they did not answer their phone at this time of night,
so I could not verify.

Note that the other vendors at lessor prices may well be acceptable
and reliable vendors. For example, US1 Camera seems to have
endorsements from CNET and other dealer rating sites and their price
is $1350 for this laptop. Their site shows in stock, but again, too
late to reach a live person by phone to confirm.

I checked pricing at CNET next:
http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/resellers/0-9719451-311-20444184-3.html?fl=0&tag=st.sh.9719451-311-20444184.sort.price

Here the lowest priced 3 star recommended vendor shows $1359 and
claims in stock. 11 vendors here with prices below $1500 claim in
stock status and four offer free shipping.

It seems this should not be difficult for you to source tomorrow. View
the pages above, call a vendor or two to verify stock status and read
the reviews of the vendors to find one you can be comfortable with.

Just for one more comparison, I visited PriceScan and found additional
vendors with stock and, of course, another set of vendor reviews:
http://www.pricescan.com/items/item145278.asp

And yet one more resource for you: Bizrate has reviews of most online
vendors:
http://www.bizrate.com/ratings_guide/guide__de_id--299.html

For example, I checked Us1Camera here to find they have a very good
rating at Bizrate and also are the lowest price of all vendors:
http://www.bizrate.com/ratings_guide/cust_reviews.xpml?mid=31643

I trust this provides you with what you need to buy this laptop. If I
can assist further, do not hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Good Morning,

I decided to try US1Camera to verify availability for you, but they
are closed Friday from 4PM until Sunday for the Sabbath.

However, rechecking DealTime this morning, Overstock has a small
supply at $1099!!! They are a reputable dealer and if you have
interest, you need to move quickly on this:

Good luck!

In my haste to post that for you, I did not read closely enough. These
are factory reconditioned. You will need to decide if the savings are
worth it to you, though I have had good success with buying
reconditioned laptops in the past. This is a personal decision.
