Where can I find statistics on the number, size and types of boats ineach state in the U.S.A. ? and From a Clarification: Great information Polypuga, thanx for the effort! But I specificaly have to find stats to compare the number of boats by the following catagories: 1. Length ie. 21'-30', 31'-40' and so on up to 100' 2. Type ie. power, sail, inboard, outboard, recreational, commercial. I would especially like to find the number of "crusing" boats and the ratio of power to sail. Answer: This exact information is available from NMMA Publications | Joyce Tyson | Phone: 888-555-2272 | Fax: 312-946-0165 | 200 E. Randolph Dr., Suite 5100, Chicago, IL 60601-6528, for a fee. Example: U.S. Boating Registration Statistics Data Tables is a detailed, state-by-state analysis of boating registrations by boat segments, size, power and hull material. Regional summaries include population, income, shoreline and inland water data. It is available as a 58-page hard-copy report or electronically via E-mail as an Excel spreadsheet. Cost is $50/NMMA members, $150/non-members. And: Quarterly Marine Registration Report is a quarterly report listing new powerboat registrations for outboard, sterndrive, inboard, jet drive boats, and personal watercraft. The data is provided nationally and for nine U.S. regions and includes the current quarter, calendar year-to-date, and rolling twelve-month boats registered. Free to members providing underlying shipment data; non-data contributing NMMA members part of MSR annual subscription, $500/non-members. Individual issues $125/members, $150/non-members. These and many similar reports are available from the following source: NMMA Statistics and Industry research Reports page: http://63.236.237.146/facts/Publications2000.htm If you do not see exactly what you are seeking in an already prepared report, these poeple would no doubt be able to tell you where to find it. Google Search Strategy: Keyword state boat type statistics ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=state+boat+type+statistics&btnG=Google+Search I hope this information satisfactorily answers your question. Please dont hesitate to ask for further clarification. Good luck in continuing your inquiries! |

Howdy, Since no official answerer has taken a try at this question as of yet, I thought Id give it a go. The following contains the 1999 US recreational boat registration totals per state (page 5): http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:0cFsKihWHtMC:63.236.237.146/facts/1999%2520Registrations%2520Summary%2520and%2520Introduction.pdf+boat+statistics&hl=en This contains the original PDF document: http://63.236.237.146/facts/1999%20Registrations%20Summary%20and%20Introduction.pdf Much more information is at the National Marine Manufacturers Association (http://www.nmma.org) at their statistics section (http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/). Notable sections include the following: 2001 National Population Estimates Divided by Generic Boat Type: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/populationestimates.asp 2000 Boat Registrations Per State: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/boatregistrations.asp 2001 National Unit Sales Divided by Generic Boat Type: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/boatingmarket.asp 1980-2001 Annual Retail Unit Sales Estimates Divided by Boat Type: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/unitsales.asp Outboard Motor Sales by Horsepower: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/motorsales.asp Outboard Boat Sales by Length and Type: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/boatsales.asp Estimates of Sterndrive Boat Sales by Hull Material: http://www.nmma.org/facts/boatingstats/2001/files/hullmaterial.asp I have not been able to find model, make, or size breakdowns by state. The source for such information may reside on each states individual web sites. Hope this helps, Polypuga (Not a Google Answerer just some guy) |

If you read through the second link, you will find on page 13 and 14 an advanced breakdown of the boat lengths and types, although unfortunately in many states (as you can read elsewhere in the document) sailboats need not be registered, and hence the statistics on such things would be warped or incomplete. Unfortunately, the lack of an invasion of privacy by the goverment into that area leaves us with probably no way of knowing--if the boats don't need to be registered, then no one is informed when they are built/destroyed, and additionally no relevant records are kept for imports and exports. Sorry. |

Boating Industry International (a trade magazine) prints an Annual Industry Review. The most recent one is in their March/April 2002 edition on Pages 9 to 16. The review concludes with 2000 year registration data by state (no size breakdown). The entire report does provide an excellent overview of the market. The magazine has a companion web site, http://www.boatbiz.com but the study is not posted there. Magazine is available in major libraries in coastal and Great Lakes areas or your local boat dealer might let you see their copy. Info-Link collects and aggregates state boat registration data http://www.info-link.com Statistical Surveys does the same, but seems to focus more on recent sales data, than boat populations. Several articles writen by them can be found in Soundings Trade Only (another industry publication) http://www.tradeonlytoday.com Each state has a little different way of counting things so aggregate data is not perfect, but much better than that available from other countries. The U.S. Coast Guard prints a data CD each quarter. You have to access it with your own database software. Is available from NTIS and called Merchant Vessels of the United States (Raw Data Only) (on CD-ROM). See: http://www.ntis.gov/search/product.asp?ABBR=SUB5436&starDB=GRAHIST I have used it several times. The database focuses on large vessels (ships), but also covers the larger side of recreational boats very well because most banks require large recreational boats to be Coast Guard Registered before loaning money on them).
