The World Bank and other sources have estimated that there are about
7,000 - 10,000 microfinance institutions worldwide.
Is there any source or combination of sources which give a breakdown
on these 7-10,000 microfinance institutions by regions or by country?
Is there an estimate of their total assets?
Is there any estimate of the gross number of microfinance borrowers
and
the gross number of microcredit savers there are worldwide?
Is there any estimate of the ten biggest microfinance institutions
worldwide?
Is there any estimate of how profitable the biggest microfinance
instituions are?
Is there any other gross financial data and/or the growth rate of
microfinance institutions worldwide?

I have been interested in microfinance since I first read of the
Grameen bank years ago, and have followed developments in this field.
I don't think there exists the type of broad overview info you are
seeking -- the field is simply too scattered, diverse, and ill-defined
to allow for easy compilation of global-scale data.
However, there are subsets of comprehensive information that detail
the activities of several hundred of the most active microbanks around
the world.
If that's of interest to you, let me know, and I can provide a
comprehensive summary of the data here as an answer.

Dear Pafalafa,
Thanks. I too am fascinated by the microfinance movement.
I take it you will be able to get information beyond what is available
on mixmarket.org? Also, do you think you can provide info in a
breakdown of the assets, # of borrowers, # of savers,
profitability/sustainability rate and growth rate by the following
regions:
Africa:
Asia:
East Europe and Central Asia:
Latin Am and Carib:
Middle East and No. Africa:
Totals:
If you can provide an answer, please go for it.
Thanks

Franks55,
I believe the closest you will get to the information you are seeking
will be found in the reports at the two links below. I'm posting them
as a clarification rather than an answer because they are not
precisely on target -- they don't cover the full range of 7,000 -
10,000 institutions, but they do capture about 2,000 of the most
significant ones.
State of the Microcredit
Summit Campaign
Report 2002

http://www.microcreditsummit.org/pubs/reports/socr/2002/app1_en.pdf
The data are in many tables and figures that are not reproducible
here, but just to give you the flavor of it, here's an excerpt from
the first link:
"As of December 31, 2001, 2,186 microcredit institutions
reported reaching 54,904,102 clients, 26,806,014 of whom were among
the poorest when they took their first loan. Nine hundred ninety-four
institutions submitted a 2002 Institutional Action Plan outlining
their progress. Assuming five
persons per family, the 26.8 million poorest clients reached by the
end of 2001 affected some 134 million family members."
The second link has country by country detailed statistics compiled
from more than 200 of the most active institutions.
If this information meets your needs, please let me know, and I will
repost it as an answer to your question.

franks55-ga,
Would information on this strictly in Asia, Central Europe, Africa,
and Latin America be acceptable?
I wasn't able to find additional information for America and Western
Europe, but I have a feeling my resource may be able to provide you
such information or give you a good starting point.
Best,

Hello again Frank.
Just wanted to check in and see if we can be anticipating any
additional guidance from you here as to whether the information posted
already comes close to your needs, or misses the mark.
I still have an interest in answering this for you if I can, but I was
hoping to hear from you first as to what would best suit your needs.
