Hi there, The result of our search returned the following results: I wasn't sure if you are water skiing on one ski or two, so here are the answers to your questions in both situations: Two skis: This link states give instructions on how to waterski and implies that you should keep both feet parallel and shoulder width apart: http://waterski.about.com/library/howto/ht_getuptwoskis.htm One ski: This link provides information on one-leg and two-leg starts. From the diagrams, it is clear that your dominant leg (in your case your right leg) should be your "ski leg" and be placed forward in both types of starts: http://www.impsports.com/starts.htm So if you're using one ski, then you've been doing it correctly, and if you use two skis then you need to bring your two feet parallel and shoulder width apart. Hope this helps :) answerguru-ga |

Hello, Speaking personally, I put my strong foot (right) towards the back, as I would rather keep the majority of my weight on my stronger leg. Of course, I am being ideal, the reality is that I constantly fight against the tow by keeping my board up and my weight towards the rear. I think that keeping the majority of weight in the rear protects in case of unexpected lurches forward. Most people fall forward or sideways, but rarely backwards (away from the tow). I also justify my stance in terms of steering, that being leaning in or out of your stance to carve the water. I think most people are worried about their balance when leaning backwards, and balance depends more on the leg holding the most weight. Therefore, you should want your balance and weight to rest primarily on your strong leg, which should be to the rear of the board. Consider also that water-skiing can be different in this regard from snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing because you are being propelled forwards by a pulling force. Hope that helps, Polypuga (not a real Google Answerer) |

Personally, also, though right-handed, I waterski (slalom) with my left foot forward. The very experienced skiers who taught me as a child had me try it both ways for the first couple of years, and in their opinion, I had better balance with the left foot forward. That was a good enough reason for me to continue to follow that advice ever since (40 years of weekly waterskiing every summer). My daughter, now with 10 years of experience of her own, also right-handed, places her right foot forward on the single ski. As with many sports, even on a professional level, what personally feels 'right' to your body, because of your unique physiology, is the best and safest method for an individual. "Rules" about style are a starting point. A coach or certified instructor can help you find the style that's perfect for you. ~larre-ga |

Note which foot is forward when you coast on a bicycle. That is the foot that you should have forward on the water ski. |

I also place my dominant leg in the back - seems to enhance my ability to control the ski since I tend to be able to input the finer muscle movements in that configuration. But it is also the way I began, so . . . muscle memory? And when I began, I was so scared of taking a belly bounce that I wasn't thinking what ski to drop! Tom |

I found this answer to be satisfactory. Thanks very much for the comments from people who water ski. THese were all much more helpfull to me than the paid researchers response. |
