I am trying to find my out who my Great, Great, Great Grandparents on the Shutt side of my family were. Also their parents and so on if possible. I will list all of the information I have on my family as far back as I can go. I will not list info. about my Father and Myself as we are both still living. So I will start with my Grandfather. Robert Earl Shutt b.4-14-1914 in Columbus, Ohio d.3-14-1987 in Columbus. Roberts brothers & sisters (all born in Columbus, Ohio): Florence b. abt.1894 (married Koehl, don't know 1st name) Nellie b. abt.1896 (married Lawrence DeLong) William H. b.abt.1900 Ralph & Ray R. (twins) b.5-18-1906 Ray d.6-??-1982 Gladys b. abt.1910 (married Carl Pritchard) Their Father was: Samuel H. Shutt b. 1870 or 1871 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio d.12-25-1943 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. Their Mother was: Ida Lumber b.? d.9-4-1939 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio Samuel & Ida were married about 1893 either in Lancaster or Columbus, Ohio. Samuels' parents & siblings were taken off of the 1880 Fairfeild County, Ohio census record which I viewed at the public library here in Columbus, Ohio. Listed here are all of the persons living in the household. All of the persons listed here were born in Ohio with the exception of William H. Shutt (Head of Household, also Samuel's Father) who was born in Pennsylvania. I will list their name, relation to head of household, age at time of census. William H. Shutt, self, 64. Sarah Jane (Kuntz) Shutt, wife, 53 Catherin Shutt, daughter, 33 William A. Shutt, son, 28 Charles Shutt, son, 26 Frank Shutt, son, 24 Nette or Netta Shutt, daughter, 22 John Shutt, son, 20 Nellie Shutt, daughter, 18 Gertrude Shutt, daughter, 12 Samuel Shutt, son, 9 (my Great Grandfather as listed above) William Miller, grandson, 8 Nettie Miller, daughter, 6 Charles Miller, son, 2 Palmer Cousetz, brother-in-law, 43 George Riffel, boarder, 26 Charles Bope, boarder, 19 I know that William H. Shutt was a carriage maker, as this was listed on the census record. I have also found reference to three Carriage & Buggy Companies in Lancaster in 1876. They were Sears & Mahoney, Geiser Brothers and the Shutt Brothers. On the 1880 census records it also shows that two of the sons of William H., William A. & John were listed as "trimmers". I don't know what trimmers are or were but they could have been people who put the finishing touches on the carriages. This is just a guess. I am currently signed onto Rootsweb's message/mail list and have searched Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com. I think that's about it. Any help in finding the forefathers of William H. Shutt born 1816 in Pennsylvania will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Willees. |

The 1850 Census lists your family as follows: Wm H. Shutt, 32, Carraige Maker, PA Jane ?, 23, Minerva, 4 They are living with 9 other non-related individuals, listed as Carraige Makers, Trimmers, etc. The website www.lancastersattic.com lists: 1840: Other prominent mechanics: ... W. H. Shutt. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tfisher/fphfairfieldbior.htm lists: Mr. Riffle (of Lancaster, Ohio) was married November 15, 1881, to Miss Nettie, daughter of William H. and Jane (Coons) Shutt. Civil War Service Records list a: Shutt William H. I 9 Ohio Cavalry. Private Private Union Ordering the service records from NARA might give some interesting info here.. have you seen 1840 census of Upper Tuplehocken, berks, PA? A William Shutt is listed 50-60y.o. with many children, including one son 20-30y.o. This wouldn't be terribly interesting except for the fact that 10 years later, on the 1850 Census, I cannot find _any_ Shutts listed in Berks County, PA. Of course, this one is a long shot. AGBI Index shows a William H. Shutt in berks County, PA listed in a book, "Early Friends fams. of upper Bucks co, Pa. and des. by Clarence Vernon Roberts. Philadelphia, 1925. (10,680p.):464" Most of the works referenced in the AGBI index are housed at the Godfrey Memorial Library in Connecticut. A photocopy service is available. Contact Godfrey Memorial Library at 134 Newfield St, Middletown, CT 06457 or via e-mail at referenceinfo@godfrey.org to make use of this service. You don't have a death date listed for William H. Shutt. The Fairfield County Vital Records office at (740) 687-7090 might have some information for you. They have death records from 1867 on, and marraige records from 1803 on..some marraige records indicate parents names, and most death certificates have a place for parents names on them. Fairfield County Genealogical Association may have many book-form resources that ma be useful to you. They have "The Index to Wills, Estates, Guardianships and Partitions. 1803-1900" Which will at least give you a death date from the Will of William Shutt. This may lead you to a local newspaper (which the society might also have) that lists the obituary for William. The Lancaster Gazette has some vital records indices from 1826-1895 which william might be in. Sorry i haven't solved your puzzle (i'm frustrated too after spending four hours on it), but hopefully I've given you new avenues to persue. |

Hi willees, I just saw your question recently and noticed that it expires today. I've been able to track your William H. Shutt from 1850 to 1900 in the census records and one bit of information that you may or may not have is that the birthplace of his father and his mother is shown as Germany. The birhtplace of his wife Sarah's parents is shown as Ohio. From 1850 to 1880 (1890 - unavailable) William and Sarah are in Lancaster, Fairfiled County, Ohio. In 1900 they are in the 10th Ward, Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio. If you have access to census records it might be possible for you to find Williams's father's name by the process of elimination of the various Shutts listed in the earlier census records. This would take quite a bit of time but is one option for you. I have a 'brick wall' in my family genealogy too so I know how you feel! Hopefully you will eventually find yours. wellen Google Answers Researcher |
