I am trying to figure out how many diagnosed diabetics there are in
the world. as of a 3-2003 diabetes care article, there are 12.1
diagnosed diabetics in the U.S. Thanks so much for your help.
anything you have based on separate countries/regions would net a
great tip, but i'm mainly looking for the overall world number.
THANKS! 100 mm is the number that i've heard, but i'm a bit worried
that this is old.

Hi!

I have a figure but it is for 1995. Although dated, it has a breakdown
of the top 10 country population with diabetics. The numbers does not
say if they are diagnosed or undiagnosed. Would you accept this as an
answer? Just let me know. :)

Hi! Thanks for the question.

I have found a more recent data from the World Health Organization
website itself which provided the 1995 data. The most recent estimate
which was done for the year 2000 shows 177 million people world wide
have diabetes.

"A diabetes epidemic is underway. An estimated 30 million people
world-wide had diabetes in 1985. By 1995, this number had shot up to
135 million. The latest WHO estimate (for the number of people with
diabetes, world-wide, in 2000) is 177 million. This will increase to
at least 300 million by 2025."

"This is about 9% of the global total."

The World Diabetes Foundation has a copy of the 1995 data whiich shows
the top 10 countries together with projections for the year 2025.

I found another figure for 1997 from the Roche website. Its estimate
of the future is also for 2025.

Do these numbers refer to DIAGNOSED people with diabetes, or the
number estimated to have it, many who may not know it? In the U.S.,
17.0 mm are estimated to have it but only 12 mm are diagnosed - so
it's a big difference. pLease let me know. thanks.

Hi again irga-ga! As I have said in my clarification request, and
which you said that you will be interested in only I must find more
recent data, these figures pertain to those which have diabetes. It
does not indicate if they were diagnosed or undiagnosed.

I hope that my clarification clears up the answer I posted above.

I said I specifically wanted information on DIAGNOSED patients with
diabetes. This is a distinction that is usually made, so for the
answer to be "not sure if they are diagnosed" doesn't actually help
much at all. I also appreciate that I probably should've offered more
money - it seems like about 10 minutes was spent on this question,
which for $4 is understandable.
