I have a Garmin Extrex Vista GPS & the MapSource software, including
the "World Map" data. I live in Singapore, and the data in the Garmin
Mapsource World Map for Singapore stinks -- it's basically got the
three reservoirs, a few major, unlabeled highways, and that's it.

I am looking for mapping information that I can use in my Extrex Vista
to get much better detailed topographic/political map data on
Singapore than provided by Mapsource. Ideally it would be compatible
with MapSource.

Hello,

Here are links to a couple Singapore waypoint websites, some of which
are in plain text latitude/longitude format others in Garmin .wpt
format (I assume that your MapSource can open both since it's made by
the same company). Glad I could help!

Additional Links:

Most comprehensive:

Next most comprehensive with subway waypoints (cool feature!):

Zipfile of waypoint file:

Hope I could help and happy GPS'ing. Btw, have you checked out
geocache yet? http://www.geocaching.com/ has info on a new GLOBAL hide
& seek treasure hunt where people list lat & long and hide little
trinkets or real money and others can find it and post on the website
about what they've found. If you're into GPS'ing, it's a blast!

Glad I could help,

This is not what I want. I want a basemap of Singapore with more
detail. All that's been provided has been multiple links to the same
hundred-odd list of subway waypoints or whatever.

If you don't know about GPS, please don't answer this question. I
found these same links with 20 minutes' searching last week.

I apologize,

Each GPSs map format is proprietary and therefore not "makeable" by
any enduser. I searched high and low for other companies which provide
3rd party maps for the Garmin line of hand GPS but they do not make
any. I called up the company and they confirmed for me that they do
not release tools nor allow endusers or other companies to make maps
which are uploadable to their Extrex line of GPS. Sorry you are out of
luck then, you can speak to a representative yourself tomorrow though,
their number is: 1-800-800-1020. They did however ask to solicit
feedback and suggestions to their cartography department at the
following e-mail address: cartography@garmin.com and will try to
accomodate their endusers in the next release of their map
information. Sorry for the mixup on the first answer of this question.
Thank you for not just closing it and rating me down, hope I cleared
up your question for you the second time around.

Hmmm. So then are there at least some basemaps I can use on a pc with
detailed singapore data upon which I can plot the waypoints I set
inside my extrex ?

Yes, OziExplorer is one such and will actually let you manage
waypoints uploading and downloading them directly from your Garmin
Extrex. As per their website: "This is the official web site for the
OziExplorer GPS Mapping Software which will work with Magellan,
Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle and MLR GPS receivers for the upload/download
of data and most brand of GPS receivers for on screen tracking of
position (Moving Map)."

http://www.oziexplorer.com/

Since they're in Austrailia I would assume that their base maps are
more detailed.

http://216.40.224.145/maps/PacificIslands2001_setup.exe

Is the specific mappack for the OziExplorer but will not work with the
demo they have on their website so I cannot vounch for exactly how
detailed these maps are. Your best bet is just to mark tracks, and
other overlays you'd want displayed over the sparse map you currently
have. OziExplorer does this easily too as per this webpage:

http://www.gpscentral.ca/mapfeatures.htm

Best of luck!

Didn't get the answer I'd hoped for. But I don't know if I should kill
the messenger or the message -- maybe what I seek truly doesn't exist.
I'm neutral on this answer.

Hi Hedin,

You might try contacting Virtual Maps who provide services to
StreetDirectory.com.sg:

You'll notice on the StreetDirectory website that they have a Tools
section which includes some items for Wireless Users/GPS users. These
were login-protected, but you might be able to find out.

Looks like Virtual Map provides some mapping data for a cellular phone
co.:
Rimman International publishes the Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley
Street Directory.

The joint venture provides various types of raw map data to GPS device
makers and customers using the ARCInfo and MAPInfo GPS software.

The Singapore-based Virtual Map has offices in Malaysia, Indonesia,
Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan and Australia.

The company provides GPS-based tracking and navigation solutions to
transport fleet operators, car rental companies and even police forces
to keep track of the location and movement of their vehicles.

Good Luck

Hi,

You can eventually create your own maps uploadable to all mapping
Garmin reveivers.

To do that you will need http://gps.chrisb.org and probably
OziExplorer to draw the map.

Hope it help
