atmosphere continues to become more polluted.

It would have to be come SUBSTANTIALLY more polluted for there to be
any effect whatsoever.  Evolution operates by altering the inheritance
of genes.  The atmosphere would need to become so toxic that a
significant number of people died as a result BEFORE reaching
reproductive maturity.

Even should this occur, the type of survival characteristics selected
for would depend on the nature of the pollution.
