******************

On their "Why Choose RAC?" page, they state:

Ask our competitors the following to help you compare breakdown
packages:

Do they offer their own patrol force?
RAC employs more than 1,300 patrols dedicated only to RAC Members, all
equipped with laptop technology.

What is their roadside fix rate?
Of all vehicles attended by RAC patrols, more than 82% are fixed at
the roadside - getting you back on your way more quickly.

Do they charge extra for labour if a roadside fix takes more than a
set amount of time?
RAC does not impose any charges for a roadside fix - no matter how
long it takes.

Are you covered in any vehicle whether as driver or passenger?
With RAC you are covered 365 days a year, 24 hours a day in any
vehicle.

Will they offer you a no call out discount if you don't use the
service?
RAC's most popular cover, Standard, offers £25 back for all members
who do not call us out during their membership year.

Will they offer to follow you once you are back on the road to make
sure you're safely on your way?
RAC patrols do.

Do they offer free online route planning, traffic news, motoring
advice and topical motoring stories?
The RAC website does - see www.rac.co.uk.

Do they have their own multilingual team on the ground in mainland
Europe to support members who are driving on the continent?
RAC has its own offices in Lyons for this purpose.

Do they offer valuable discounts on servicing, flights, car rental,
package holidays and family days out?
The RAC Rewards programme can easily save the cost of your membership
through the wide range of savings it offers.

Have they got more than 100 years of technical expertise in serving
the needs of the motorists of the United Kingdom and Ireland?
RAC was formed in 1897 with the sole purpose of looking after the
needs of the motorist.

RAC offers its Members all of this and much more - from just £34.

************

They also offer "Accident Solutions" which is explained at
http://www.rac.co.uk/breakdowncover/uk/accident_solutions/

Again, the basic RAC membership includes "if we can't fix your car
there, a tow to a nearby garage [within 10-mile radius]" and the next
plan up states "If a breakdown can't be fixed locally within a
reasonable time, we'll take you, your car and up to seven passengers
to any mainland UK destination in one continuous journey" so the
latter membership would take a lady anywhere on the mainland UK.

Also, I searched "rental car" on both sites and found:

AA - Hire of Replacement Vehicle
"Hire of replacement vehicle
You can claim up to £25 a day (plus VAT) for a maximum of 5 days
towards the cost of a replacement vehicle. You must have a valid claim
for repair under this policy and You should request prior
authorisation from the Claims Department to hire the replacement
vehicle. The following conditions also apply:

1. The hire vehicle must be rented from a bona fide rental operator.
2. Cover does not include the first 24 hours of car hire.
3. Fuel and insurance costs are Your responsibility.
4. You must send a receipted rental agreement to the Claims Department
to claim reimbursement.
5. The length of hire is limited to the time the Insured Vehicle is in
the workshop undergoing repairs and does not include time spent
waiting for repairs to start or for parts to become available.

NB If you are in any doubt whether the cost of hire car will be
covered by this insurance, please phone our claims helpline on 0870
242 2808."
From: Terms and Conditions for AA Personal Warranty at
http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/warranty_terms_and_conditions.html

[Rental was also mentioned above in the AA European Breakdown
Assistance information.]

*********

I could locate nothing about car rental from the RAC website.

The online contact form for AA is
https://www.theaa.com/common/contact_us_form.jsp and the contact page
for RAC is http://www.rac.co.uk/contactus/.

I hope my research has provided you with the information you are
seeking. I didn't locate response time for breakdown assistance at
either club and that may be because the time factor would depend on
location and how many other breakdown the AA or RAC might be assisting
when a lady phoned in for breakdown service. However, you may contact
the AA and RAC directly and they may be able to give you an estimate
for various UK and European areas.

I am still waiting for answer clarification on this. so cannot add a
rating. I wanted infromation on all car break down services and such
questions as although AA claim that they will stay with women until
the appropriate help comes they in effect may refuse to do so. Can
they insist that they stay? There are other claims like providinf a
car if that is the service you have paid for. I was refused a car once
because the car would still go . The warning light was on and the
manual said dont drive vehicle with this llight on. What are our
rights

Clarification of Answer by journalist-ga on 08 Mar 2003 07:21 PST
Thanks for your patience. I've been gathering additional resources
for you and have discovered the following:

Firebond Insurance in the UK offer breakdown service insurance at
http://www.firebond.co.uk/firebond/default.asp In the left column are
links - see Breakdown for the link. I would post it but it's a framed
page and the URL just shows as default.

"Cover can include:
7 DAY FREE CAR HIRE
If your car is unfit to drive due to fire, theft, vandalism, or
accident, you will be provided with A free hire car, regardless of
fault.

OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION
If it would be better for your car to be repaired rather than
recovered following a call-out, you will be reimbursed for overnight
accommodation for £20 per person, up to a maximum of £120 per
incident.

MESSAGE FORWARDING
Should you become involved in an incident, we will try to phone
someone for you, to inform them of your situation and whereabouts.

RAPID RESPONSE PLEDGE
Wherever you are, one free phone call ensures expert help will be with
you fast - normally within one hour. And in the unlikely event that
it's not, you can claim £10."

A copy of the policy is located at
http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:OfTfs_0xMuIC:www.firebond.co.uk/firebond/pdf/Classic%2520Car%2520Breakdown%2520Wording.PDF+%22breakdown+service%22+britain&hl=en&ie=UTF-8.
A part of the policy reads "OurRescue Controller will assist you
professionally, sympathetically and deal with your request quickly".

Autonational Rescue offers breakdown and rescue service at
http://www.autonational.co.uk/motorservices.htm.

Green Flag offers explanations of their breakdown services at
http://www.greenflag.co.uk/uk_motoring/uk_breakdown/breakdown.asp

None of the breakdown services I located had a guarantee that an
assistant would stay with a single lady in a breakdown situation. All
of them stated that transportation would be provided to a garage or
other destination but none specifically stated "if you are a lady
travelling alone, a breakdown assistant will promise to stay with you"
- none said it plainly like that. So if it is not promised *in
writing* in a lady's policy, then there is no legal recourse.

If any lady is interested in companion service then she might ask that
be written into the contract for breakdown services. All contracts
must be reviewed for your book, I know. You've probably done a lot of
reading already - if your book is going to state what each policy
offers, then you would need to contact the services and request paper
copies of their actual contracts for review.

In your situation of breakdown, was there a stipulation that the car
had to be totally unable to move to *qualify* as a genuine breakdown?

According to all the policies, transportation to a garage is
guaranteed IF that type of coverage has been purchased. In an email I
received from AA, I was informed that a lady (or anyone) could ride
along with a breakdown assistant or ride in the garage truck to the
garage. AA does not have a specific "road companion" that accompanies
an assistant to a breakdown in order to stay with the person.
However, the email did say that a lady should specify she is alone and
a person with a handicap should specify their handicap in case special
transportation is needed. It appears that no company offers a
"breakdown companion" - they all state that the motorist will be taken
to a garage or destination specified by them IF they have that in
their coverage.

Your rights would be according to the breakdown service coverage you
purchase. Normally, a policeman will stay with a motorist if the
police are called to the scene.

Other references for women and travel that I found include:

for women at the wheel

Should you need further clarification, please request it. I
appreciate your patience while I gathered more sources and waited for
my email queries to be returned (although only AA has responded so far
- I hope the others will respond as well).

Hello again, Deseven! I am still awaiting responses from the other
companies I emailed. I hope to hear from them and I would suggest
that you also email them for copies of their contracts, not copies of
their web site "promises". lol I don't know why but those things
*do* seem to differ sometimes.

I'll keep you posted as I receive additional information. Here's
hoping they answer me promptly! :)

Hello again! An update: Still no word from the other UK breakdown
services. It may be because I mentioned I was in the U.S. and they
did not feel it was necessary to answer my queries. But at least AA
certainly came through!

Have you had success in your own email queries? let me know if there
is anything related to your question that requires further research
and I'll be happy to respond.

I belong to the RAC. When I have phoned them, they always ask me if I
am on my own, and also about where I am parked: is it well lit (if at
night), are there other people about, do I consider it a safe place,
etc. The longest I have had to wait so far before the van arrived is
about 30 minutes. I haven't got experience about rented cars etc,
because I have only called them out 4 times in the six years I have
been driving, and each time it was because of a flat tyre which was
changed on the spot.

I would like information on all companies not just RAC and AA. Also I
would like informahard to get hold of. I have not read through all
your references yet though. For instance women have often complained
that although the AA say they will be there with in an hour and will
stay with you if you are on your own until what ever is needed arrives
they frequently try and get out of this. Can the women insist. What
rights does she have? That sort of thing

Many thanks to you, Deseven, for the rating, comments and your added
generosity!

I saw a commercial on television a couple of days ago regarding a US
cell phone company that was offering some type of one-time breakdown
service to its customers in an introductory cell phone plan. I
searched the web for a reference (I don't recall the company name) but
I was unable to locate it. However, something similar may be
available for cell phone customers in the UK and I wanted to mention
it in case that was an option for inclusion in your book.

Here's wishing you great success with all your books! :)

for any info I can add at a later date. I, too, am a writer and so you

Hello again, and I hope your book efforts are proceeding with success.
I wanted to let you know that I've searched occasionally for more
ideas and info and haven't come across anything of consequence to add
yet. Just keeping you posted. :)
