In Tom Stoppard's play Travesties, one of the characters says about Switzerland, What a bloody country even the cheese has got holes in it! I know I've heard this saying before. Two years ago, I searched for the author and figured out (I'm pretty sure this was through a web search) that the author was La Rochefoucauld. Now, I can't seem to find this quotation anywhere on the internet (I've even tried typing it in French!). I'd like to know who said it and whether the source can be cited or the attribution is apocryphal. Thanks! |

I haven't been able to turn up a connection with La Rochefoucauld, but I would wager that Tom Stoppard did not originate this. Although I can't give you an exact citation, I am sure that I saw this quote used by P.G. Wodehouse in the 1920s or '30s. It certainly sounds like something that Jeeves' airheaded employer, Bertie Wooster, might say. I hope another Researcher has better luck digging up some hard evidence. This is one of those questions that is going to nibble at my brain until it is answered. ;-) |

Thanks, Pinkfreud, for attempting to answer. Unfortunately I am not very familiar with Wodehouse. Hopefully someone will figure it out! |
