I am looking for a copy of the cover of "9 to 5" that was played on
the episode of This American Life
(http://thisamericanlife.org/ra/207.ram -- fast forward 56 minutes).
It was recorded in 1985 by The Hammond State School Performing Group
in Louisiana. The group is comprised of developmentally disabled
students who were participating in a music therapy program. I would
either like to find a CD that I can purchase which contains this song,
or a downloadable copy of the full track.

Please note that the This American Life contact guidelines
(http://thisamericanlife.org/pages/contact.html) ask that you do not
e-mail them with questions about the music played on the show, which I
hope that people will respect.

ccb,

I have left a voice mail message with the Head Librarian at the
Hammond State School regarding this recording. I will let you know as
soon as they respond to my request.

ccb,

I have been leaving voice mail messages with the person I was told was
the right person to talk to; I finally spoke to her in person today,
and discovered that she was NOT the right person (she just didn't feel
any need to call and let me know that).

I have now left a voice mail with (supposedly) the right person, and
am hoping that they will return my call soon. I will keep you posted.

Thanks,

Good news, ccb!

My voice message was returned, and I now have an Answer for you.

I tried looking up this recording in the Library of Congress On-Line
Catalog at http://catalog.loc.gov , but it does not appear to have
been cataloged with the Library of Congress. That, and the fact that
the recording was made in 1985, made it somewhat unlikely that an ISBN
(International Standard Book Number) had ever been assigned to it. The
age of the recording also made it unlikely that anyone is still
producing copies for sale.

When I first started looking for the "Hammond State School Performing
Group", I found no entries. Then I tried "Hammond" with "This American
Life", which revealed the name "Hammond State School Performer's
Group".

For this search term, I found only the references on the "This
American Life" website. "Hammond State School" only brought up older
pages, mostly State of Louisiana budget documents and the like.

Then I found this page, from the Louisiana Department of Health and
Hospitals, detailing the Louisiana Human Service Laws:

"TITLE 28. MENTAL HEALTH
CHAPTER 1. MENTAL HEALTH LAW
PART I. SHORT TITLE, INTERPRETATIONS,
AND DEFINITIONS"
"The name of Hammond State School is changed to Hammond Developmental
Center."
http://www.dhh.state.la.us/OMF/research/HumanServiceLaws/Chapter%2001.pdf

This is an Acrobat .pdf document. If you do not already have Acrobat
installed on your PC, you can download the free Acrobat Reader here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

Or, you can view Google's cached version of the document here:
http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:1KrGWahGTV8C:www.dhh.state.la.us/OMF/research/HumanServiceLaws/Chapter%252001.pdf+%22The+name+of+Hammond+State+School+is+changed%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Aha! The name of the school has been changed!

Searching on "Hammond Developmental Center", I found a page for the
Louisiana Institutional Libraries:
http://www.state.lib.la.us/Publications/Directories/institut.htm

"HAMMOND DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER
Ms. Antoinette Liuzza
45439 Live Oak Drive
Hammond LA 70401-9420
225-567-3111 Ext 388
FAX: 225-567-2017"

This name is not the name that was originally on the page; it was
changed today, apparently in response to the several phone calls I
made to the wrong person. IGNORE the 388 extension, that belongs to
another person and should have been changed.

The person who returned my call today (bless her heart) is Shannon
Trautman. She confirmed that the 1985 recording had no ISBN number and
is not being produced for sale today.

HOWEVER:
She did tell me that she would be willing to make an audiotape
recording of it for me if I sent her a tape! When I asked, she assured
me that this would be consistent with copyright permissions on the
recording. (However, if you are intending to use it for some
commercial purpose, say in a movie or TV show, or other
revenue-producing endeavor, you will need to get explicit written
permission from the school to protect you legally.)

She agreed to let me give you her phone number, which is actually the
voice mail number for
Librarian Toni Liuzza: 225-567-7374
Toni's e-mail address is: hdca0016@dhhmail.dhh.state.la.us

or you can call the general school number 225-567-3111 and ask for
Shannon Trautman to make your arrangements.
