Hello,

A definition of soft shell crabs taken off a website (link below)
states:

"Crabs grow by shedding their outgrown shell. The rigid shell
imprisons the crab and limits growth. Once the shell is shed, the crab
can absorb water and expand into its new grown shell. A soft-shell
crab is one that has just discarded its shell."

Since soft shell crabs are just normal crabs (read: most often blue
crabs, stone crabs, or king crabs) they are not poisonous at all. Some
of the parts (the gills and the like) are not as tasty and should be
cleaned and discarded, but will not hurt you. There have been old
false rumors about female blue crabs being poisonsous as stated in
this article on crabbing (linked below):

"Some people believe the males are tastier. It may have something to
do with an old wive's tale that maintained the females were poisonous,
Ecret explains."
