Question ID: 172588
I need a list of at least five non-food retail websites in ARGENTINA.
They must be B2C sites (so not Ebay, not clasifieds, not shopping
comparison sites, although the latter can lead you to appropriate
sites). They must TRANSACT ONLINE (ie not a site that shows products
but doesnt let you buy). The top sites may be foreign (Amazon is the
best example) but I dont just want a list of US sites.

- Comments. A one or two sentence salient summary of relevant points
about the retailer (more than the site). This is also
a good place to say why this is a leading site and to highlight online
revenues and/or number of online customers for the retailers if
available at all.

2. I also need a list of the five leading FOOD retail websites (again
they must sell grocery online). Same as above.

If as you are searching, you come across any additional data on size
of online shopping in the country, online population, etc, please post
as additional URLs with no need for explanation.

Thank you

Request for Question Clarification by elmarto-ga on 06 Mar 2003 13:12 PST
Hello webuserid-ga,
While I've been able to find several non-food retail websites in
Argentina, I've only come across two online grocery stores. The other
online food-related sites I've found sell cooked meals. Would such a
list of websites do?

Regards,
elmarto

Hello Elmarto,

I amot interested in cooked meals retailers even though they sell
online. But the other information you have found about non-food
retailers and the other two online grocery retaielrs seem to be
exactly what I am looking for. If you have come across also some
online stats, please post them too.

Hi webuserid!!

I am living in Argentina, so I am in a good position to help you in
this request.
First of all I must say to you that is very dufficult to find
statistics about online revenues and/or number of online customers
for the retailers.

Non Food Retailers:

-Musimundo:
http://www.musimundo.com/emusi/home.asp?home=1

This is one of the first online retailers. Musimundo is the leader on
music sales. this company had a big growth during the 90´s. It starts
with only one shop unit and finished being the most important company
on this category. At this time Musimundo not only sells music cd´s, it
also sell software, hardware, electronics (audio and video players),
videotapes & dvd´s and books.

-Garbarino:
http://www.garbarino.com.ar/

Today this company is the leader in electronics sales and it is the
preferred site for this category. It also sells software, music cd´s
and video dvd´s.

-Fravega:
http://www.fravega.com/Merchandiser/Fravega/fvg-Index.jhtml

This is the great competitor of Garbarino, but only sells electronic
products, not music and video products. Both companies compite in this
market sector from about 50 years.

-Tematika.com:
http://www.tematika.com.ar/tematikad/plsql/home?p_alianza=218

Tematika is the leader in the online book retail. This company is the
biggest online bookstore in Spanish language of the world.
Tematika.com is the reference place for who seek the last one
bestseller and a technical or difficult book.
It also sell music cd´s and dvd´s videos.

-HolaCine:
http://www.holacine.com.ar/

I am not sure if this company fits your requeriments, but I put it in
the list because it is the most popular in its category. This company
sells cinema tickets and products related, such are posters,
soundtracks cd´s, video dvd´s , etc.

-AltoCity.com:
http://www.altocity.com.ar

Altocity is a company that offers to sell everything that you can find
in a shopping center. Altocity is an undertaking of two of the most
important groups businessmen of Argentina and of the world: IRSA Group
and Telefónica.

-El Mundo del Juguete:
http://www.elmundodeljuguete.com.ar/

After 20 years, El Mundo del Juguete has become the more important
chain of toystores of the Mercosur and it is present in the main
commercial centers of the country through its 45 branch offices
distributed in Capital Federal and in the provinces of Buenos Aires,
Cordoba, Mendoza, Tucumán, Salta and San Luis.

I can add two more from the computers category. Actually both
companies are operating in a retracted market due the economical
crisis.

-Computer´s Depot Argentina
http://secure.lacompu.com/shop/

The leader in this category. This company is orientad to sells
hardware.

-CDMarket online:
http://www.cdmarketonline.com.ar/

This company is oriented to sell software.

-----------------------------------------

Food Retailers:

-DiscoVirtual:
http://www2.discovirtual.com.ar/Home/Login.asp

http://www2.discovirtual.com.ar/home/home.asp?DePreHome=S

This is the online version of the supermarkets Disco; one of the
oldest grocery stores of Argentina. This is the most used in this
category (I also use it, and I am a happy client of this company).
there are two ways to buy online here. One is visiting the website,
and the other is using a sofware provided for free by Disco. Disco is
a chain leader in the Argentine market of supermarkets that was based
on the year 1961 and that counts today with a total of 190 stores
distributed by all the country.

-LeShop:
http://www.le-shop.com.ar/leshop/login_2.html

LeShop was born in 1998 and was one of the first supermarkets by
internet in Europe, at present leader in Switzerland. In Argentina,
during the year 2000, Le Shop had launched the first supermarket 100%
by internet. There are no "offline" stores of LeShop.

These are the only two groceries that sell online.
Jumbo (one of the most important chain of supermarkets) is improving
the system by open the "School Products" department open to operate
online.

I found the following company not related to a big supermarkets, so
may be it doesn´t fit your requirements, but this is what we have:

-Mercado Fresco:
http://www.mercadofresco.com/

Mercadofresco com delivers weekly inyour residence a great variety of
farm products, cold cuts, fruits and vegetables of station recently
harvested and especially chosen for the costumers.

-------------------------------------------------

THE USE OF INTERNET IN ARGENTINA CONTINUOES GROWING, ALTHOUGH TO AN A
GREAT DEAL SMALLER RHYTHM: IN OCTOBER 2002 THERE IS 3.600.000
INDIVIDUAL USERS.

In regards to the statisticals studies of the Internet use in
Argentina, there are not much information available, but i found

"Internet: Perfil del usuario Argentino" (in Spanish),
by Julio Aurelio/Aresco (this is a well detailed analysis, but it is
from August, 2001; you could compare this with the first document of
this list):
It says for example (translated from Spanish):
"As for the places of e-commerce, the ranking is headed for Garbarino
with a 77%, followed by Fravega and Musimundo. More down the levels
of knowledge are located of Amazon, Disco supermarkets chain and the
shopping virtual Altocity."
