In the mid- to late-1980s, my friends and I attended a travelling film festival in Wisconsin (not "Spike & Mike's", but something similar, with a focus other than animation). One of the short films shown was a vintage "adult" (i.e. pornographic) silent film that had dialogue dubbed in, to great comedic effect. As I recall it, the setting for the film was three or four people going for a drive and stopping for a picnic, and the film appeared to be from the silent era (1910-1920). According to the information presented at the festival, the overdubbing had been done by two well-known comedians / comedic actors for a friend's birthday party. The voices for the dubbed dialogue sounded very familiar, but with just one viewing, none of us were able to pin down exactly who they were. So my question is: can you provide substantive information about the film, ideally including where a copy can be obtained? | |

This is a tough one, I could not find the answer, maybe if you posted the name of the film festival you were at and the exact year, and any other details you could possibly remember, someone might be able to find it. I did however find something of note while tring to figure it out, I found a googlewhack: overdubbed pornographic 1930 film comedy hehe, its jld |

I'm still waiting to hear from Google about becoming an "Official Google Answer Person", but decided to take a hack at your interesting question anyway. The movie you're looking for is a version of "A Free Ride", the original directed by "A. Wise Guy" and photographed by "Will B. Hard." :-). Interestingly enough "A Free Ride" is considered by many historians to be the first "genuine" American stag film. There's some dispute over its year of production though. Most historians list it as 1915. But according to Jack Stevenson's online article, BLUE MOVIE NOTES - ODE TO AN ATTIC CINEMA, "... this basic oft-repeated 'fact' is disputed by leading silent film historian, Kevin Brownlow, who, judging by the fashions on display, pegs it as probably a film from 1923." http://hjem.get2net.dk/jack_stevenson/blue.htm The basic plotline is as follows. A man takes two girls for a drive in the country. He stops the car gets out and walks behind a bush to relieve himself. The girls spy on him and become excited. The rest is probably best left to the imagination. I discovered that this was the "right" movie at film.com's 1986 review of the documentary "The Hollywood Erotic Film Festival" ... http://www.film.com/film-review/1986/10182/109/default-review.html Scroll to the bottom of the page for a brief mention of the comedy overdubbed version of "A Free Ride." I was able to locate a video called "The Hollywood Erotic Film Festival", which is variously listed as having been released in 1986 or 1987, but can't determine whether it is indeed the same documentary containing "A Free Ride," although I suspect it is. Surprisingly, I couldn't find any information concerning it from my old reliable, the Internet Movie Database. In any case, half.com lists various sellers of the VHS at ... http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid=4943515&domain_id=&meta_id=3 I'd suggest contacting one or more of the sellers for more information. Good luck and thanks for using Google Answers. (btw, Google, I'll still be happy to take my piece of the $25.00 :-)) rico-ga |
