Dear Acnodes,
Many sites and companies promise you to enhance your link popularity,
hence improving your ranking. However, FFAs and link exchange schemes
are not recommended by the undersigned.
Think about it rationally: the people who put their links on your site
(or that your post your links in their sites) are in the same
condition as you are. They have low-ranked sites, and thus use these
programmes in the first place. The Google bot does not rank you only
according to the quantity of the links, but also according to their
quality, i.e. *who* is linked to you. If you are only linked to sites
in your own (or worse) condition, what good would it do?
Moreover, "advertising" your site in these places might even cause a
backlash: you might get tons of spam.
Google themsleves write:
"Fiction: Joining a link exchange or "free-for-all" link program will
boost my rankings.
Fact: Linking schemes do not increase a given site's PageRank, and
will often do a site more harm than good. Many sites that advertise
link-sharing programs not only offer little value, but will distribute
your email address without your permission, resulting in an increased
volume of unwanted mail to you. " (Source: Google Information for

There is no easy and fast way to enhance your link popularity:
- You have to market your site to other, better ranked site, to the
media, and actually, to anyone who would listen.
- You have to have a highly accesible site (minimal frames, flashes,
etc.);
- good graphics and design
- internal links: each page could (or should) be related to one topic,
and the links should reflect that. That way, you'll have referrals to
your internal pages, not only to your index.
- Your search words and key words should be perfected: Several sites
offer the most searched words, those that would bring
you up in the results list, although probably not in the first place:

http://www.goodkeywords.com/

http://www.keywords.com/
These are only few, and as you could see, I put here several
directories with more than one site. It should be noted, that the most
searched words might not always help you. If the most searched word in
technology is "mp3" (see Google's "Zeitgeist" -
://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html), then it wouldn't really
contribute to people looking for your specific business, right?
A site that might help you as a Webmaster, to discuss the issue with
other webmasters, is http://www.webmasterworld.com/ and its forums.
I hope that answered your question. If you need any clarifications,
please let me know - I have searched the relevant terms for you in
Google and I also added lots of my knowledge in the field. I'd be
pleased to answer any clarification request before you rate the
answer. |
