There were a 100 or so of these lovelies in the early talkies and a
few (including Paulette Goddard, Betty Grable, Jane Wyman, etc.) found
fame and fortune.

But what happened to each of the others?

I am sure that every dedicated Googler will rise to this challenge
without the need for a lavish price or even the promise of a huge tip.

Dear probonopublico-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

The best that one could hope for is to find a list of the actresses’
names and search each one by hand. I have begun this for you and
indicated how you can proceed in order to find the answers you are
looking for. In order to keep you from wasting your time with many of
them, I should say up front that these ladies have since passed away:

The ladies have passed away:

Bannon Bonnie d. 02/14/1989
Ball Lucille 8/6/1911-4/26/1989
Bentley Irene  d. 11/1995
Booth Karin  6/20/1919-1992
Bruce Virginia (real name: Helen Virginia Briggs) 9/29/1910-2/24/1982
Carver Lynne 9/13/1909-8/12/1955
Carey Mary Jane  d. 01/11/1990
Daye Loretta d. 08/23/1995
Deanne Marjorie d.1970
Dodd Claire (real name: Dorothy Anne Dodd) 12/29/1908-11/23/1973
Ferguson Helen 7/23/1900-3/14/1977
Gest Ina 2/11/1921-12/31/1964
Goodard Paulette (real name: Pauline Marion Levy) 6/3/1911-4/23/1990
Hall Ellen  4/8/1922-3/24/1999
Keithley Jane 4/12/1908-9/13/1944
Lacy Adele  1913-7/3/1953
Lange Mary  1913-4/20/?
Lorraine Betty 6/30/1908-9/1/1944
Lundeen Florence 11/16/1903-2/20/1983
Miller Lorraine 1/5/1922-2/6/1978
Patrick Dorothy 6/3/1921-5/31/1987
Pepper Barbara 5/31/1915-6/18/1969
Perry Wanda  7/24/1917-/17/1985
Pike Nita  1913-5/10/1954
Vernon Irene 1/16/1922-/21/1998
Ellen Vera  d/ 08/30/1981
Wood Helen 6/4/1917-2/8/1988

Only a handful went on to make a significant name for themselves as a
solo act. I’ve done the work on these ladies for you in order to save
you even more time. Neither these, nor the names listed above appear
in the finished list below, but they all were indeed Goldwyn Girls:

Lucille Ball

Vera Ellen (real name: Vera Ellen Westmeyer, nee Rohe)
http://www.streetswing.com/histmai2/d2vera1.htm

Ann Miller (real name: Johnnie Lucille Collier)

Shirley Ballard

Christian Linda
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Christian,+Linda

Coonan Dorothy
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Wellman,+Dorothy+Coonan

Dell Myrna

Now for the rest…presumably, they are now retired and/or living
private lives unless otherwise indicated on the link beside their
name. I have placed a link beside each name where the dancer/actress
went on to have a limited acting career and was credited with at least
one performance other than a Goldywn Girl act. A few of them are still
acting to this day. I obtained the list from STREET SWING, which is
complete as far as the names go but is not up-to-date in terms of
which ones are still living:

STREET SWING - THE GOLDWYN GIRLS

Now, before you start, you will see that I have already worked the
first 20 or so names in the list. If a link from the INTERNET MOVIE
DATABASE (http://www.imdb.com) appears next to their name, they are,
or have been an actress beyond their association with the Goldwyn
Girls. Go to the database and look up the names, beginning where I
left off. You will find out which ones acted, are still acting, or
have since died:

Wow! What an answer.

My thanks to you all.

I never knew that Virgina Mayo, Ann Miller, Vera-Ellen and Linda
Christian had all been Goldwyn Girls.

As regards Toby Wing, I seem to recall that she passed away a few
months ago ... I believe that she was in her 80's.

I have seen the Street Swing site previously but without noticing the
Goldwyn Girls page. On that occasion, I emailed Sonny that he had
confused Maud Allan (the dancer) with Maude Allen (the actress) but he
replied that he knew best ...

Kindest regards

Bryan

We all know what happened to Lucille Ball, so I doubt that you're
looking for info on her. ;-)

Here's a bit of data on a few of the lesser-known Goldwyn Girls after
their Goldwyn days were over:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Barbara Pepper~
"Barbara Pepper is best remembered as Green Acres' Doris Ziffel, but
she was also a former 'Goldwyn Girl' who was a real hottie when she
was 23."
The Good Scenes
http://www.geocities.com/goodscenes/z/chaser.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~Ellen Hall~

"The daughter of silent screen stars Emory Johnson and Ella Hall,
Ellen Hall made an inauspicious screen debut in an unbilled bit part
in Universal's Academy Award-winning All Quiet on the Western Front
(1930). She returned to films a decade later playing bits in
Hellzapoppin' (1941) and Louisiana Purchase and was one of the
'Goldwyn Girls' gracing the Danny Kaye extravaganzas Up in Arms (1944)
and Wonder Man (1945)... Retiring to marry restaurateur Lee Langer in
1946, she returned for Jimmy Wakely's Lawless Code and several Cisco
Kid television entries. In the 1970s, Hall functioned as president of
the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Iris Meredith~
"Blonde Iris Meredith (née Shunn), a former Goldwyn Girl, was
beautiful and talented enough to have risen to the top at her studio,
Columbia Pictures. Instead, she became typecast as a B-Western
heroine, albeit one of the best and busiest in history."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~Toby Wing and Pat Wing~

"With her cotton-candy hairdo and infectious smile, Richmond's Toby
Wing (born Martha Virginia Wing)... first gained notice as one of the
Goldwyn Girls gracing Eddie Cantor's Palmy Days (1931) and The Kid
From Spain (1932)... But when all is said and done, Wing did more
cheesecake layouts than actual performing and she later became
something of a joke. Retired since 1943, when she married
aviator/stunt pilot Dick Merrill, a still very attractive Toby Wing
appeared in the television documentary Busby Berkeley: Going Through
the Roof (1998). Her sister, Pat Wing, was also a Hollywood chorus
girl."

A note that is unrelated to the ladies listed above...

My great-aunt, the late Mary McDougal Axelson, was a screenwriter in
Hollywood during the 1930s (her biggest hits were "Life Begins" and "A
Child is Born.") According to Great Aunt Mary, who loved to tell tales
of Tinselsown, some of the Goldwyn Girls were high-priced courtesans
as a sideline, and after their starlet days were over, several of them
took up hooking as a full-time profession.
