I have a PC usng Windows 98 2nd version. I have a problem that came right out of the blue---- when I click on "shutdown" the system does shut down and then immediately starts up again--almost as if I had clicked "restart" instead of "shutdown". Can anyone give me the steps to overcome this problem? |

Hi superroy, 1) An easy thing to try is: Start / Run type " SFC " tick "Scan for Altered Files" click "Start" If that didn't find the source of your trouble, and to avoid solving one problem only to cause another, it is best to take your time and start with the easiest less invasive solutions, and work your way up. Therefore, I suggest you do some troubleshooting first. 2) Microsoft's article "Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition" here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q238096 3) Microsoft article "How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Shutdown Problems": http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;202633 4) Google Groups: Overview of Shutdown procedure: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Windows+98+second+edition+restarts+after+shutdown&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=TGbv3.4142%24%2593.18856%40news2.atl&rnum=8 5) If you still have the same problem after following the suggestions in the above articles, the next step is to download the "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement": http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/ Additional Links: Google Groups discussions to browse: Windows 98 second edition restarts after shutdown: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=Windows+98+second+edition+restarts+after+shutdown&btnG=Google+Search Bud's Troubleshooter: How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems: http://www.geocities.com/~budallen/98seshutdown.html Google Answers: Computer won't turn off: http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=95308 I hope this helps. If you have any questions or if this doesn't solve your problem, please post a clarification before rating my answer. Thank you and Good Luck. Do let us know how it goes! hummer |

You may have wake-on-lan activated in your BIOS or some other conflicting BIOS power setting. Make sure your BIOS is properly set for use with Windows 98 or "Soft Power Compliant OS" Source: Experience |
