I have a side chair that is 19th C mahogany with the signature of the
maker on the underside of the front rail. The handwriting reads "John
L. Chase." I have been unsuccessful in learning who he was--where he
lived and what else he made or what his dates were. I would
appreciate any help. |

Hi 3answers-
Can you tell us what style your chair is -- Chippendale, Federal,
Victorian, etc. and/or describe the legs, feet, back and any carving?
Is this an upholstered chair or a dining room chair?
Does it appear to be the work of a skilled cabinetmaker or is it
perhaps a "country" piece?
You say it is "19th century," how do you know that?
What if anything do you know about who owned it before you?
Any additional information you can supply may help a researcher to
find an answer.
Chase was, and still is, a name associated with New England,
particularly Massachusetts. I have not, however, found a cabinetmaker
named John Chase in a a preliminary and admittedly brief search.
Thanks.

Hello Nellie,
Thank you for your interest. The chair is a formal ca. 1850 mahogany
side chair--no arms--with 3" upholstered seat and serpentine front.
The chair has an open lyre back splat, that is, two lyre sides, no
strings carved. It has a beveled top crest that runs down to the seat
on both sides and sabre legs. It is the work of a skilled chairmaker.
Very faint plane marks can be seen on the rear side of the lyre
splats. The mid 19th C designation is my own. It had a yellowed
varnish when I found it. I do not know who owned it previously.
Again, thank you for any help.

One more question, please. Where did you find it.... that is in what
state and was it a private sale/acquisition or from a dealer?
Thanks
Nellie
