Hi, looking to spend up to $2,500 on a high-end stereo system cobbled
together from USED hi-end gear. Would only need stereo, not surround
equipment. Looking for AMP/Receiver, and speakers. I know of sites
like www.audiogon.com and ebay where one can buy used hi-end gear, but
I'm really looking for web-sites or discussions on exactly WHAT kinds
of systems one would buy, with specific names and recommendations
listed. Equipment could be from as old as 10 years ago. Thanks!

Hi -

Are you looking for a full-range (20Hz - 20KHz) setup?

Yes, full range would be best. I'm thinking sub-woofer/satellite combo
but towers or descriptions of both kinds of systems would be great.
Thanks!

Audio Review is an excellent source of peer review new and used hifi
equipment.

Audio Review Web Site:

My stereo is strictly home audio; not home theater. I can highly
recommend the Acurus DIA-150 especially coupled with Sonus Faber
Concerto or NHT SuperTwo speakers. The DIA-150/SuperTwo combination
turns out to be a very exceptional system at a very rock bottom price.

Acurus is now owned by Klipsch.

"DIA stands for "Direct Input Amplifier." It allows the sources, such
as CD, to be connected directly to the power amplifier. In the DIA
concept, there is no preamplifier. By eliminating the need to pass the
source’s signal through a preamplifier’s gain stages, we maintain the
integrity of the original signal, while eliminating the cost of
additional circuitry."

Of course, Martin Logan speakers would also be a very fine match for
this amp.

Maxhodges, generally a solid answer, but I was kind of hoping for
maybe an article or something like "Great USED systems
recommendations" instead of having to troll all the sites you gave me.
I do appreciate the answer, however, and will consider it answered,
but I will give you just a little more time to see if you can find
something along the lines listed above. Thanks, again.

jugger-ga,

Thanks for the feedback and opportunity to clarify my answer for you.
Generally people don't specifically review used systems. Generally,
products are reviewed and you can often find them used.

Audio Review is one of the best sites I know for reviews, and it's
pretty easy to troll without spending too much time. For example,
click the amplifiers category, then you can sort by Price and see
ratings, or sort my Ratings and check price. There are LOTS of
excellent choices in your price range. If you are overwhelmed by
choice, simply apply this principle: the harder it is to chose between
two or more alternatives the less the decision matters! The more
equally attractive the options are, the less significant the decision.

If you are seeking a used system under $2500 then I can recommend with
confidence the Acurus DIA-150 with the NHT SuperTwo speakers and a
Sony Elite CDP-XA1-ES CD Player. Throw in $350 for some high-end
speaker wire and you should still be well under $2500.

I did a LOT of research before I decided on the DIA-150 and SuperTwo
combination, which I bought new. I spent hours on the web and at hifi
shops to research and audition systems. I listen to jazz, techno and
classical mostly, so I had high demands. For instance, I wanted deep
and accurate bass which is hard to find at an affordable price. The
SuperTwos deliver exceptional sound and exceptional bass for a system
without a sub. I would have preferred two speakers and a sub, but
given my budget and space the SuperTwos have not disappointed.

If you read the reviews for these products, you will see that they are
widely held to be outstanding products at this price point.

The Krell KAV-150a is another amp at this price point that is sure not
to disappoint:

Thanks; I've had a chance to read some of the reviews for your
recommended products and I see you have done a lot of work on checking
these systems out. I appreciate the time and effort!
