Several years ago I taught an adult Sunday school class in which we
discussed the problem of having a "loose tongue." Here are some verses
from the King James Version of the Holy Bible that the class found
meaningful:
"Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people."
(Leviticus 19:16)
"Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips."
(Psalms 141:3)
"In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that
refraineth his lips is wise." (Proverbs 10:19)
"A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools
proclaimeth foolishness." (Proverbs 12:23)
"Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a
fool than of him." (Proverbs 29:20)
"Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no
better. The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of
a fool will swallow up himself. The beginning of the words of his
mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness."
(Ecclesiastes 10:11-13)
"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they
shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words
thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."
(Matthew 12:36-37)
"And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to
house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking
things which they ought not." (1 Timothy 5:13)
"If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his
tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain."
(James 1:26)
"Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things.
Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a
fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it
defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and
