Can you narrow "european" down a little? Are we talking Germans,
Italians, Britians, Jewish or..? Or do you want them all? Thanks!

lior_g-ga,

I know New York pretty well, and think I could answer your question
well. How long would this list have to be to be considered adequate?
Given the size of the immigrant population in New York and the number
of grocery stores, it could go on for days.

Would one or two grocery stores for three or four different
populations be enough?

Thanks.

I'm looking into marketing French Chocolate and my target consumers
are
1) Western Europeans, mostly whites (which are known for their love to
European quality chocolate).
2) Sophisticated or educated White Americans with average and above
average income.
3) Supermarkets - means big groceries Stores (Not Delis) it could be
chains like "C-Town", "Met Food", "Key Food"..... or private owns
store.
4) Please don’t send me a list of stores from the Yellow pages. I need
to understand the area bordered by streets, and the stores name &
address (Phone will be appreciated) who are located in each bordered
area.
Thank You,

I’m not sure you will find any neighborhoods left in New York that
have any clustered or centralized populations of Western Europeans,
especially affluent ones. Representatives from the French Consulate,
the German American Chamber of Commerce, the Belgian American Chamber
of Commerce, and the Spanish American Chamber of Commerce all
confirmed this. Based on your clarification, I concentrated my search
on German, French, Spanish and Belgian stores, but kept all options
open.

Schaller & Weber is a specialty store that carries imported German
meats, but also is a complete grocery store, with a full line of foods
including chocolates. Schaller & Weber is on the Upper East Side, an
area noted for its upscale shops and housing. It’s on 2nd Avenue,
between 85th and 86th.

The German American Chamber of Commerce, like all the other European
chambers of commerce, can probably offer some assistance in serving
specific communities. Many require you to pay a membership or
consulting fee. A helpful woman in their New York office recommended
Schaller & Weber, and also suggested that a larger chain like
Associated Supermarkets carry many imported and European foods.

There is an Associated on the Upper East Side:

Grace’s is an upscale grocery without a European specific bent, but
does sell many European chocolates.

The cultural services desk at the Belgian American Chamber of Commerce
says that there are not many Belgians in New York, only about 8000 in
the tri-state area. They generally refer those looking for Belgian
Chocolates to one of the upscale or gourmet grocery stores in
Manhattan, which would include Grace’s Marketplace and these:

Krasne’s Supermarket in the Gerritsen Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn
is a very old and well-respected Jewish grocery. It is a large store
serving a large European Jewish community. According to the PRIZM

The host at Solera Restaurant, recommended by the good folks at the
Spanish American Chamber of Commerce as the best Spanish restaurant in
the city, considers the 8617 Northern Blvd Corporation as the best
source for Spanish (European) food in the 5 boroughs. This specialty
store carries nothing but imports from Spain, and is open to the
public. 8617 is located in the Jackson Heights neighborhood in
Flushing, Queens.

I had very little luck finding information about French grocery stores
in New York. The French American Chamber of Commerce had no
information, and the French Consulate was a little offended that I
asked. The French Culinary Institute, (212) 219-8890, recommended Dean
and Deluca. The French Trade Office, (212) 307-8800, specializes in
answering questions like this, but only for business customers who pay
a fee.

This web page has a complete list of international chambers of
commerce in New York City:
http://nyc.chamber.com/INTERNATIONA.html

This site allows you to search by Zip code to get very generic
demographic information about an area. For a fee, you can request more
comprehensive reports:

I hope you find this information helpful.

I'm sorry. You asked about european population in New York, not
european tourists . I offer some history of New York until someone
finds the answer.

According to http://www.ny.com/histfacts/settlement.html :

"Manhattan

Giovanni da VERRAZANO may have been the first European to explore the
region, and Henry HUDSON visited it, but Dutch settlements truly began
the city. In 1664 the English seized the colony and renamed it; during
the AMERICAN REVOLUTION they held it from 1776 to 1781.

Brooklyn

From Dutch and Walloon settlements it became the village of Brooklyn
Ferry (1816) and the city of Brooklyn (1834), absorbing settlements
like Flatbush and Gravesend as it grew; it became (1855) the third
largest U.S. city.

Queens

Queens was largely unsettled except for small farms and rural
settlements. Most of the settlement of this area has happened in the
19th and 20th centuries with an influx of immigrants looking for the
American dream.

Bronx

The Bronx was originally settled by Jonas Bronck in 1636. He claimed
the area for his farm. The population explosion that took place in the
19th and 20th centuries was due to an influx of Italian and Irish
immigrants.

Staten Island

The Island was originally discovered by 16th century Florentine
explorer Giovanni Da Verrazano. In 1687 the Duke of York offered it as
a prize to the winner of a sailing race."

So I will look for maps of "white" people in New York:
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/meta/long_68172.htm

Here is the best map I found for european people in New York:
http://130.166.124.2/atlas.nyc/ny0_20.gif
(http://130.166.124.2/ny_1.html)

Here are more accurate maps:

http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/dcp/pdf/mbkpl5.pdf (Brooklyn)

http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/dcp/pdf/msipl5.pdf (Staten Island)

I don't have time to check which market is in which place in a map,
but here is a listing of 150 department stores in New York (AOL Yellow
Pages): http://yp.aol.com/main.adp?_dircat=1204G5301&_diraction=search&_dircity=New%20York&_dirstate=NY&_dirzip=&_diraddress=&_dirlat=407142&_dirlong=%2d740064&_dirmyaddr=&_dirreferer=&_dirdma=16

lior_g-ga, for 40 dollars you may not get the answer, because finding
out the phone numbers for all those areas may (or may not) take many
hours and so the earnings per hour may be too small for anybody,
unless someone knows a fast way to solve your problem or just wants to
solve it for fun.
