Question ID: 174306
I'm looking for a list of the top 100 (or so) companies that offer
business to business franchise opportunities in the United States.
See below for specifics:

* A business to business franchise is defined as a franchise concept
for whom the majority of the customers of the franchise are
businesses. So, for example, McDonald's would not be on the list,
since most of the customers of McDonald's are consumers. On the other
hand, FastSigns would probably be on the list, since most (if not all)
of the customers of a typical FastSigns franchise are businesses.

* When I say "top 100" I'm defining it ideally in terms of the *number
of current franchisees* multiplied by the *average revenues per
franchise*. If an operator has 5000 current franchisees that gross an
average of $10K each, they would rank lower than an operator that has
1000 current franchisees that gross an average of $100K each. That
said, I'm not *that* picky, as long as I get a list that is focused on
"business to business" franchises and has some mechanism for ranking
them in terms of the size of the overall operation, based on the
amount of "activity" among current franchisees.

* For each franchise operator, I'd like to know (ideally) Company
name, address, phone, contact name, website, franchise description,
and "size". I've indicated my *ideal* criteria for "size", but I've
also noted above that I'm not super-picky, as long as there is some
reasonable proxy
and the list is focused on business to business franchises. To
clarify, I do not need a list of the locations and contact information
for the individual franchisees, just a list of the 100 (or so) leading
franchise operators, as defined above.

Hi there,

The contact information is available for every one of these franchises
but the text is way too massive to post here. However, if you simply
search the name of the franchise in the Google search engine, you will
be able to find the contacts. If you cannot find the contact
information for one, please post a comment or "request clarification"
and I'd be happy to post it.

The ranking procedure I used incorporated the Entrepreneur magazine's
Franchise 500 rankings as well as rankings by other franchise
directories. If there were inconsistencies, I would check the
statistics for the franchises in question and make a judgment call.
Most of the top 50 ranks follow the Entrepreneur magazine's rankings
(of course, the magazine ranks both business-to-business and
residential so it had to be filtered carefully). The following is a
quote from Entrepreneur magazine:
"The initial Franchise 500® in 1980 was the first ranking of
franchises in the industry. Over the years, we have polished and
perfected our ranking procedure, giving us a formula that accurately
identifies today's top franchise opportunities for you....We consider
numerous factors in our ranking, some of which are weighed more
heavily than others. The most important ones include financial
strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system. We also
consider the number of years in business and length of time
franchising, start-up costs, litigation, percentage of terminations
and whether the company provides financing. Financial data was audited
by an independent CPA firm. Every company with verifiable data
receives a cumulative score. The franchises with the highest "cumes"
become the Franchise 500®. These factors are objective, quantifiable
measures of a franchise operation. We do not measure subjective
elements such as franchisee satisfaction or management style, because
these are judgments only you can make based on your own needs and
experiences. All companies, regardless of size, are judged by the same
criteria. "

Now, for the rankings: (please note that the comments included are
either provided by the franchise themselves or otherwise and not by me
so it will contain biased "sales pitches". I have only included them
so that you can get the general idea of what each franchise does)

Thanks for the work here. Using the Entrepreneur 500 was a good idea.
I have had some luck identifying contact info for these folks, and I
appreciate your offer to ask you to help if I cannot find contact
info.

The only thing I'd like a little help with is that I was hoping to get
some proxy for *size* or "activity" of the franchise operator. While
the Entrepreneur 500 does rank in part based this attribute, there
isn't much that makes the level of size/activity clear, beyond the
occassional marketingspeak about it, and, even then, it is stuff like
"700 outlets in 22 countries" which isn't too specific about size in
the U.S.

Did you uncover anything that would help in that respect? As I said
in my request, I am not super-picky about how size is defined, though
I have suggested my ideal definition, and I'm really interested in the
size of the U.S. based activity only.

Thanks,

--SK

skriplani,

I have been looking for the past few days and unfortunately I have
been unable to uncover such information, except those advertised in
promotional activities. I will however continue searching and post my
findings as soon as possible.
