My outlook .pst file overwrote itself and I lost all my saved emails
and address book. I tried the repair tool and went into my trash to
see if it was in the deleted area, but to no avail. I was about to
give up when a friend pointed out that my .pst file is very large for
one that was just created (34.3 megs). Question: can I recover my
old information from this file ? If so, what are the steps I need to
take ? Please lead me through the recovery process if there is one.
Payment made upon file recovery.

Please let me know what happens if you open Outlook, and then
select, from the menubar, File --> Open Special Folder -->
Personal Folder. Then navigate to the 34.3MB .pst file and
open it. Does this give you access to the contents you are
seeking?

A search for .pst files turned up these four files: 1)
mail.imagemogul.com-00000007 C:\Documents and
settings\administrator\local settings\application data\microsoft
outlook pst file 376,832 bytes 3/11/03 When I attempt to open it I
get: "unable to display floder this is the root of an IMAP store, the
root does not contain messages but may have subfolders ..... There
are no subfolders that I can access here.

2) mail.imagemogul.com-00000007.pst.bk C:\documents and
settings\administrator\local settings\application
data\microsoft\outlook. 81,920 bytes 2/6/03. This file is a back-up
I made AFTER the event. One I should have made BEFORE the loss.

3) outlook.pst.bk C\documents and settings\administrator\my
documents. 36,061,184 bytes 2/10/03

4) F:outlook mail.pst 43,401,216 3/11/03 ( I guess this is the
current active file)

I wonder if the information I seek is within any of the above files,
but unavailable.

JK...

You indicate that you tried to open the "pst file 376,832 bytes
3/11/03". In Windows Explorer, go to the outlook.pst.bk file, and
rename it to outlookbk.pst or somesuch. Then, open Outlook, and
select, from the menubar, File --> Open Special Folder -->
Personal Folder. Then navigate to the outlook.pst in C\documents
and settings\administrator\my documents 36,061,184 bytes 2/10/03
file and open it. Does this give you access to the contents you are
seeking?

I renamed the back-up file and opened it in Outlook, but it is the
file I saved "after the horses left the barn". I fear that Outlook
overwrote the original. I downloaded some software that allows me to
look for deleted, even partially overwritten files on the hard drive,
but I could not locate any deleted files of a .pst type. I was
wondering if outlook would concatenate or absorb the original in some
way that could be recovered but I find no evidence so far that it did
or could. Of course the answer to my troubles is to back up
frequently. I am unhappy, however that Outlook could be so easily
destructive to information. I am not optimistic at this point that
any information is retrievable.

Kahniget.......

Thanks for posting. What do you mean by "reset view" ? I am not sure
the file
overwrote itself, just presumed so because I cannot see any of my old
mail. also, should I compact the file to see if it greatly reduces in
size ? If so, how is that done.

Thanks,
JK

Outlook does not dynamically decrease the size of the .pst file when
it is emptied. If the file is truly empty, compacting it will
decrease the size. You did not say how the file "overwrote itself".
Is it possible that the views for the folders have been messed up?
Reset the views for a few folders. Are the messages there?

The process for compacting folders may vary somewhat from
version to version, but generally, it's something like this:
Tools --> Services --> select 'Personal Folders', then click
on the 'Properties' button, then on the 'Compact Now' button.
