Question ID: 174957
What's the best way to get a job writing the stories and scenarios for
video games? I am a writer, not a programmer, but am an enthusiastic
35-year-old gamer with a reasonable knowledge of the various genres
and would love to get into this industry. Is it possible? Also any
information on how video games are storyboarded would be interesting.
thanks very much
Angus

Wow! That was fast, googleexpert-ga, thanks. I'll trawl through those
sites but I guess I was hoping for a little general advice first - is
it possible for a professional writer like myself (journalist and
author) to break into video games or are they the sole domain of
20-something computer fanatics? Do developers look at scripts and
ideas in the same way as movie producers do? Should I get a "pitch"
together- or would that be a waste of time? Also, do developers hire
writers/editors to work on their projects?

thanks again

Hi! Thanks for the question.

Whenever I want to look for information on jobs and careers, I always
go first to the Occupational Outlook Handbook website.

Upon inspection, yes you do have a chance at a career in the video
games industry if you work hard enough. Your work will mostly be in
the games design segment of the company. The whole article provides
the inner workings in the development of games and the type of skills
necessary to create a full pledge video game.

The report says that in every game studio, teams of game designers,
artists, programmers and testers comprise a team.

“Game designers write the blue print of the game. They decide mission,
theme and rules of play.”

Designers comprise of the following people:

1. Lead designer
2. Level designers who work with artists and programmers.
3. Writer designers who write game text and dialogue (This will be
your part)

Early stages of development come from the designers as well. They go
through phases of brainstorming, writing scripts and storyboards. The
report also says that a strong ability to write is essential for those
working at game design departments. Courses in English, theater and
other liberal arts subjects is an advantage. The catch is that the
report also mentions that you still to have an understanding in
computer programming and how computer software works. The most common
degrees in game design are English, art, and computer science.

The report is an essential read if you want to break in the video
games industry. You can read all about it in the following link:

“Working so others can play: Jobs in video game development”
http://www.bls.gov/opub/ooq/2000/Summer/art01.pdf

Another link also gives a good account of the steps you must follow to
be a video game designer.

“There is no such thing as someone who just sits around and thinks up
cool ideas for games all day, so be prepared to acquire a bit of
knowledge in a lot of areas. Writing ability (both technical and
creative) usually tops the list, but employers are also looking for
skills in design theory, computer knowledge, sketching/storyboarding,
and an understanding of coding, as well as presentation, management
and leadership skills. Don't worry if you don't have every one of
these skills, but try to focus on developing yourself in these areas
over time.”

Thanks googleexpert - I only expected an answer, not a career!
Especially for $5. Maybe if I'd paid $100...
