Prefer this ASAP! [= days, including today! rather than week(s).] To
be used only for a personal, non-commercial objective, that is really
overdue.
I am trying to locate a viewable-online-source for cartoonist Jeff
Macnelly's illustrations (not *just* the "Shoe" strip; or, see below).
The image(s) themselves, not just sites/references or the name of a
book. And need to be able to electronically copy or otherwise snag it
off the site page.
Specifically, I prefer the kind of characters (human) he created to go
with the humorist Dave Barry's columns. I have found lots of "Shoe"
sites, but the ideal for me would be one of the human characters
(definitely MALE), who is - FIRST character activity/appearance choice
by far - typing (typewriter, computer). Next choices, at least seated
at a desk; or a medical doctor in garb.
WAAY second choice for actual Macnelly character "line": a Shoe
character that is not **fat/slovenly like Shoe himself, that otherwise
meets the criteria of image appearance/activity.
(**"NOT that there's anything wrong with that!" It's just that Shoe
himself is too opposite of the specific person who is the
recipient/victim in my ultimate mission.)
For an answer, I'd like...duh. ;-) But if you find a few fitting
images in your travels, a couple/few selections of both the
typing/desk kind of character and the doctor character would be much
appreciated, even from *both* the "human" line and the "Shoe" line. If
it's the second choice Shoe line type, please post a description first
if it's the only character type being provided as an answer. |

For starters, here's a MacNelly image of a guy typing on a computer
keyboard:

This image could be altered as needed (for instance, the baseball cap
could easily be removed.)
Is this the sort of thing you're looking for?

Hi, thanks, you're so close, please let's tweak! Won't leave you high
& dry, you've done well. This may help: specific real-life person this
is for is a doctor in practice, who writes a newsletter for his
patients and now uses a lame, pedestrian icon of a guy typing. It's
too bland to fit his personality. In a perfect world, I would *LOVE* a
color image.
In this one, the guy looks too much like he's viewing porn.
http://www.tmsreprints.com/technology/images/0427edmac-a.gif
In this one, the guy is fat/slovenly, as needs to be avoided. The
doctor has a weight loss practice!!! So although this would be funny
considering that, he wouldn't use it.
http://www.macnelly.com/editorial_images/macnelly_edtoon061199.html
*REDIRECT*: I should probably limit it to "typists" or doctors, not
desk-sitters, so it will be a more relevant substitution for his
current icon.
http://www.macnelly.com/editorial_images/macnelly_edtoon092899.html
This is closest, although he's talking, and I'm undecided whether it
illustrates his task of typing up his column as I seek...

<<This image could be altered as needed (for instance, the baseball

Potential new question, when we're done with this one: Can you
personally do any image tweaking that may be necessary to remove
components? Or add some color if best found is black & white? Can you
find a MacNelly doctor and make him sit down and type? (HAHA the last
part is a joke. Serious on first, though.)

I have not been able to find any suitable Macnelly images of doctors.
Perhaps another Researcher will be able to do so.
Here's a guy at a computer keyboard:
http://www.macnelly.com/editorial_images/macnelly_edtoon061899.html
I have an extensive background as a computer graphics artist, and can
certainly "tweak" an image for you, if that is desired. For instance,
in the image linked above, I could get rid of the five-o'clock shadow
and make the bathrobe look more like a business suit.

Closer, thanks! But, I think the (usually single panel, color)
characters used in Dave Barry columns are not found within MacNelly
political cartoon archives. Do you know the ones I mean - did you see
Barry columns before MacNelly passed? The columns were based in the
Miami Herald and distributed to other papers all over.
*That* would probably be the specialized search required; finding a
source for *that* character line. IF and only if you think this new
search angle could make a difference (I have no doubt the sought-after
activity would appear in one of these, he did tons)we could: 1) keep
this question going; 2) keep it going w/ a tip offered, you know
better than me about etiquette at this juncture; 3) I could enter a
new question.
What do you think? At your discretion, in consideration of your
response to these, you can now call my question/answer bought and paid
for if necessary. But can you first post whether in your opinion the
"new angle" is feasible to pursue? THANKS for everything. (And I may
be in touch about the editing.)
(Yesterday I sent an e-mail about copyright issues, just in case, to
the MacNelly site, and described but didn't ask specifically where to
find these characters. Didn't think at that time it would be so hard.
If they answer that the images can't be used under any circumstances,
obviously they won't tell me where to "lift" them either. But you
could try...) ;-)

I have spent several hours combing the Web for MacNelly images. While
there are quite a few sites that are reprinting Dave Barry's
syndicated columns, the wonderful MacNelly cartoons that appeared with
the columns are very scarce online, and I haven't been able to locate
anything that seemed suitable.
I've run out of search strategies; I am unlocking your question so
that other Researchers may take a crack at finding what you need. If
you decide that you'd like some "image tweaking," I'm at your service.
Sounds like fun.

Don't worry, I'll put you out of your misery now. But wanted to say:
you researchers should talk to the bosses at GA so a procedure can be
put in place to tip someone even if a question is canceled or passed
on to other researchers!!! Did I forget to say *!!!!!* Should
definitely be a subscriber option. Anyway, maybe I can make up for it
w/ that tweaking job lsoon!

Don't worry about "putting me out of my misery." I do this for a
living. I'm a masochist. :-D
If you decide on some tweakage that you'd like me to try, I'd love to
take a shot at it. In case you wonder about my credentials, here's an

I hear ya, sister (brother?? Sorry - focusing on the "pink" in your
name)!! I wouldn't be doing THIS if I wasn't a masochist! It wasn't
asked for or even hinted at (maybe the doc LIKES his current lame-o
typist; or uh-oh, maybe his kid drew it). I just love brownie points!
;-)

Even if the doc likes his stodgy icon, if he has a sense of humor he
is sure to get a kick out of your suggested new artwork. If I have a
hand in it, he'll be tickled "pink." ;-)
Is there a reason for focusing only on MacNelly? Widening the field of
cartoonists might make it easier to find something that fits your
doctor.

Good question! ($2.50 please. Hahaha) No, actually there isn't! I
guess it was a matter of having the "brainstorm" to find him a new
icon - given the misfit w/ current one - and *off the top of my head*
only being able to think of one cartoonist's work that would be a big
bingo. So you know, since it would therefore be soooo easy to
proceed...NOT!
I'm not very familiar w/ cartoonists. Maybe you now get the gist of
the "attitude" I seek. And, the drawing style. Hard to describe what I
mean by that -- best to say similar to MacNelly's fleshed-out images.
I wouldn't like lines that are stark, geometric, angular, overly
simple, or just plain and realistically rendered for this purpose. I
like MacNelly's wise-ass, loaded-with-uncontrived detail style.
This is one case where a copy-cat would be welcomed...(HEY! How about
the guy who did this:
http://reuben.org/news_may2000.asp
Editorial Cartoon by Jeff Stahler of the Cincinnati Post
Yes, I'd look at others! (Has Bill Watterson done other illustrations
besides "Calvin"? Looks like he can render detail sometimes. Actually
the dad in "Calvin" ....DO NOT listen to me. You'd know more
cartoonists. If you want to continue, just focus on the MacNelly
school of style and attitude.
NOTE: the image couldn't be verging on unprofessional, or the doc
wouldn't use it. And, color please? Should be easier now that the
field has opened up... ;- )

No, had wanted it soon to place in a correspondence I needed to send
him anyway. But I ended up sending him this "transcript" last night.
So I may even find out that he wouldn't give up his current icon. (In
which case, I'll wish the prized final image was unisex, so *I* could
start using it on my own compositions! Although not the ultimate goal,
feel free not to disregard any female typists stumbled upon
accidentally! No dumpy, bifocal-wearing Gladys- the-secretary- types
though, they would have to be babes-haha.)
Another passing thought was that, if "it" works this way, a fitting
image could be scanned in from some physical media like a mag/book
(MacNelly & Barry both have several) that some GA staffer may have
around....

Thanks for all your efforts. But I'm going to close the question out
momentarily. Much to my ...."deflation"...(and probably yours too by
now!), the quest for the best possible character fitting all of
factors A-ZZZ as detailed originally, may not be generating the
enthusiasm from target victim that was anticipated. =( <*sigh*>
At least we got to laugh at a lot of cartoons along the way! I will
*definitely* request you if I ever need image editing!
