Just to be certain we have the correct painting in mind, is this the
work in question?

Yes, that would be the one.
Can a copy be purchased?
Do they make art prints of that one?

I've spent several hours looking for an art print of this famous
painting but failed to find one. I've already thoroughly searched
Ebay, Amazon.com, and many other sites but found nothing of interest.
However, I found a company that specializes in art reproduction. Would
you go for a reproduction of the work or, in case the artwork is not
readily available, are you willing to have the artwork reproduced?

Clarification of Question by reg9-ga on 14 Mar 2003 09:49 PST
No I don't think I can afford to have a reproduction made.
The basic has been answered. I can't get what I want for working class
wages. painful as that is.
Maybe I'll visit it someday.

Thanks for the info.

I understand your situation. Just in case you'd like to know, a
reproduction of this work range from $200+ to $500 and up depending on
what size you want it to be.

If you want, I can point you to several books about Domenico
Ghirlandaio and his works. Although Leli pointed out that there are
different opinions regarding the identity of the artist behind the
Madonna with St. Giovannino, as I also found out from my lengthy
search yesterday, there is a big chance that you can find the painting
inside the pages of the books I found. If you like to settle for this,
please tell me so that I can proceed. Would you like me to?

Clarification of Question by reg9-ga on 14 Mar 2003 11:41 PST
I am surprised that a reproduction would be so cheap.
Settling for a art book with it in it would be just fine for now.

"Settling for a art book with it in it would be just fine for now."

I would like to make it clear that I'm not 100% sure that the copy of
this painting can be found in the books that I found. Some of the
books show the works of Domenico Ghirlandaio and I'm merely assuming
that a copy can be found inside the pages. So if you want to take a
chance and you are sure that you'd like to get the titles, please tell
me. If you agree on this, I will also give you the details of the
company regarding the art reproduction.

I'd like the names of the book(s). Then I can go hunt them down at a bookstore
or museum gift store or something and check them for a picture of that painting.
Seems the most logical at the moment.

Dear Reg9,

First of all, thank you for letting me answer your question. Your
question really captured my interest especially when I found out that
the painting you are looking for is the subject of attention among UFO
buffs and skeptics. As a result, my search became a personal task
because I also wanted to know more and find a copy of that famous
painting. I tried a lot of search strings and sifted through a lot of
information to get the desired result hence the delay.

The Madonna with Saint Giovannino hangs as part of the Loeser
collection at the Palazzo Vecchio. The true artist behind this famous
artwork is the subject of debate among many scholars and the opinions
regarding this vary from source to source as my dear colleague, Leli,
mentioned in her comment below. As implied in your original query,
some sources say it was painted in the 15th century by Domenico
Ghirlandaio (1449-1494).

Whether Ghirlandaio did it or not, the remarkable thing about the
painting is the disk-shaped object at the back and above Mary's left
shoulder. A blow up of this section (lower picture) shows a man
standing with his dog looking at the object in the sky. Simply press
the "Shift" key before clicking on a link so it will open a new window
or right-click on the link and choose "Open in New Window" for your

Is it a hoax? A mistake in the painting? A spot of dirt? A
coincidence? You be the judge. Here are other links that show this
painting and UFO's in old works of art:

In my clarification I mentioned that I'll give you several titles that
might contain this famous painting. This is what we researchers call a
"shotgun approach" -- give you as much information as possible hoping
to actually hit the specific target that you want. My persistence paid
off and I finally found the thing that you are looking for -- in
print. Because of this, the result I originally intended to give you
changed because I removed a lot of 'buckshot" and filtered the
information. You can find the printed copy of The Madonna with Saint
Giovannino on the cover of this book:

If you want to see the original painting you should visit the Loeser
Collection is located at the mezzanine floor of the Palazzo Vecchio.

The Palazzo Vecchio
"In the rooms of the mezzanine, created in the 15th century by the
architect Michelozzo who lowered the ceiling of some of the rooms on
the first floor, are displayed the paintings, sculptures and pieces of
forniture (from the Middle Ages to the 16th century) presented to the
Comune of Florence by the American collector Charles Loeser.

Among the more important works are Bronzino's Portrait of Laura
Battiferri, a Madonna and Child with St John the Baptist by Alonso
Berruguete, a Marble Praying Angel by Tino di Camaino and a wooden
group of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, the
architect and sculptor responsible for the original nucleus of Palazzo
Vecchio."

Note to researchers:

Not everybody agrees that Ghirlandaio painted this.
It hangs in the Palazzo Vecchio where it is attributed to an unknown
Florentine artist.
http://www.edicolaweb.net/nonsoloufo/nu07_04i.htm
Another frequent attribution is 'school of Filippo Lippi'.
