On a World War II Memorial in Marion, Ohio is a quote, "They sought no bounty, leaving peace in their footsteps." There is no attribution listed so I contacted the folks in Marion. Someone there had heard the quote on the History Channel but didn't know who said it. I tried the History Channel's website but couldn't get an answer. Can you help? |

U.S. Representative Steve Buyer (R-4th Indiana) seems to have turned an alternate version into an all-purpose quotation. See: Desert Shield, Storm veterans honored at Arlington http://www.af.mil/news/Dec2000/n20001213_1829.shtml Rep. Steve Buyer (R) of Indiana http://www.house.gov/buyer/biogen.htm He used it in Congress at least a couple of times earlier -- once in 1997, concerning a Post Office naming, and again in 1998, during the House debates about the Articles of Impeachment of the President. "And then I thought about the World War II veterans..., a unique generation. They were truly crusaders. They fought for no bounty of their own; they left freedom in their footsteps." I haven't located an original source, however. hlabadie-ga |
