Hi there,

Firstly, public nudity is officially banned throughout Hawaii. If the
beach is secluded enough this shouldn't be a problem, but I have
spoken to people who frequent Secret Beach on Kauai who had many
problems with the police.

I found two beaches that meet your criteria of black sand, nudity and
palm trees.

Kehena Beach on the Big Island:

"It is a black sand beach with wicked riptides (there are occasional
drownings here) and a steep-descent trail. It is more for hanging out
than swimming."
http://www.andhawaii.com/hawaii/hawaii-travel/i/062501.html

"Puna's main nude beach is Kehena Beach... The cliffs and dark sand
make for rustic scenery, and tall trees offer shade for the short
beach. The beach is popular with local gay nudists. Be sure to bring
some kind of footwear since the black sand can get hot."

Black Sands Beach on Maui:

"Maui Sun Club is located on 19 acres of secluded subtropical
rainforest adjacent to Maui's most beautiful state beach park. Black
Sands Beach although not clothing optional is within walking distance
of the Maui Sun Club."
(I'm unsure if "not clothing optional" means you have to wear clothes,
or you have to be nude)

Also worth a mention is Red Sand Beach on Maui:

and Honokohau Beach on the Big Island:
"The sand is a mixture of bits of black lava and white coral, making
for a grey or tweed sand beach....At the ends of the beach stand some
trees for shade, but you must arrive early to claim these spots."

Yup, I have been there, and robert is dead right. The irony is that
in a well respected guide to Hawaii, one that is mostly right on the
button, they start the beaches segment with the line "What this (Big)
island needs is a good beach

Your official answer warns that nudity is discouraged in the Hawaiian
Islands. While your researcher was thorough in fulfilling your request
for black sand beaches, the Big Island of Hawaii has some wonderful
isolated white sand/mixed sand beaches where you can find pockets
(sic) of nudism particularly during the week. Waialea beach between
Puako and Hapuna (also known as 69 beach for the telephone pole #
where you turn off the road toward the beach)is particularly
beautiful. Manini'o'wali beach north of Keahole airport and north of
the shoreline cinder cone is a great white sand beach with some
isolated areas that can accommodate nude sunbathing. Wonderful Kiholo
beach, accessible by hiking from just north of telephone pole 81 off
the Queen's highway has those warm brackish ponds with both white and
black sand (pebbles). The setting is inspirational and justifies
covering up as required by the occasional visitor. The Pololu Valley
on the north side of the island past Hawi has a black sand beach and
isolated sections that are good for nude sunbathing. Unfortunately,
the rip tides can be severe at this location and I do not venture into
the water except on the calmest days. The people of the Big Island
are very welcoming...We hope you decide to visit leaving your clothes
and your money behind (sic)...:))...Thank you for visiting

"Little Beach" is a well-known clothing-optional beach on Maui.

Of course the reference to Kiholo Beach is to hike to the beach from
parking around "mile" marker 81 on the Queen's Highway instead of
telephone pole #81. The reference to telephone pole #69 at Waialea is
correct.
