According to figures provided by the Bank of England Monetary &
Financial Statistics Division, the average exchange rate of the euro

You can access the data from the Bank of England web site at
http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/mfsd/rates/ by selecting 2002 from the
Annual section. The data is in the form of an Excel 97 file and
includes information on the rates of a number of other currencies
against the UK pound as well. If you want more historical data, you
can get annual files from 1997 onwards.
In addition, files are provided with more-detailed breakdowns. Files
showing quarterly and monthly data are available from 1999 to the
present, and daily figures are available from 2001 to the present.
Average rates are calculated based on working days in the month,
quarter or year, with exchange rates for the two days of the weekend
being the same as that for Friday.
