Hi there,
I spent a good amount of time searching online and then calling up
classic video collectors, only to get a flood of "sorry, don't have
it".

However, as a last hope, I contacted a person who sells copies of
discontinued TV shows and classical movies that I found previously
while researching for another question. As luck would have it, all
the time spent was not in vain; he does have a vhs copy of the movie,
in good quality, that was converted directly from a reel.

At this point, you can contact him directly to make arrangements.
His name is Alex Bleicher and his email address is:
alexbleicher@hotmail.com

Best of luck,
Tox-ga

Nancylynn-ga replied that a British collector had a copy. How would I
go about contacting that person?

The link that Nancylynn-ga provided is not a list of a British
collector's movie collection; its simply part of a massive list of
directors and their movies. I believe Nancylynn-ga misinterpretted
the page.

However, have you contacted Alex Bleicher about the tape?

Hello flan-ga:

According to Blockbuster, the film isn't available as a rental or for
purchase:
http://www.blockbuster.com/bb/movie/details/0,7286,VID-V++++93770,00.html?

I have a few suggestions for you:

A British collector had it in stock as of 1994:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22The+Great+John+L%22+trade+buy&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=dirlist-sept-part4%40natalie.ibmpcug.co.uk&rnum=3

You can also post a request for a trade at this popular tape trading
site:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&group=alt.video.tape-trading

You can also check Amazon's Auction and Zshops sites at
www.amazon.com, and www.half.com and www.ebay.com, from time to time
to see if there's a copy for sale. (I couldn't find a copy at any of
those sites today, but there's always a chance a copy will turn up.)

Sorry I didn't have any luck. I hope one of my fellow researchers has
more success locating a copy of this film for you.

Regards,
nancylynn-ga

Good luck finding your movie!

I saw it many years ago on the late show, while I was going to
university, and enjoyed it greatly. Sullivan was such a legendary,
larger-than-life character, I'm surprised that he hasn't been the
subject of more films.
