I need information on a German Author by the name of Andreas Moritz
Andrefen. Published works in 1845 and 1850. I heard that he was
executed in Hamburg Prison in 1868 or 1869. Can you give me any
information you might have about his life, and if he was executed,
why? |

Hi thirteen,
Could you mean Andreas Andresen, author of Handbuch für
Kupferstichsammler [art]? If not, could you please give us at least
one title or subject?
Thanks,

Dear thirteen,
I will contact various sources in Germany, especially in Hamburg. This
may take some time, please be patient. In the meantime, any additional
information you provide could prove very helpful. For example:
- What kind of author was Herr Andresen? (Note: The name "Andrefen"
does not exist in Germany. I am absolutely sure that the "f" is
actually a "long s", as it was also used in old English, both
hand-written and printed) Did he write fiction, non-fiction, poetry?
- Do you know the titles of any of his works?
- Anything else you can tell us?
Best regards,
Scriptor

I have one book written in German. As best as I can tell the title is
Lefurh fur Volksfdjulen, or perhaps Chriftlicher Rinderfreund. And
yes the name is Andresen. Thanks

Dear thirteen,
This is very interesting. "Lefurh fur Volksfdjulen" makes no sense at
all, but I am absolutely sure the actual title is "Lesebuch für
Volksschulen" (= Primer for Elementary Schools). Also, "Christlicher
Rinderfreund" would mean "Christian Friend of Cattle". Of course, that
can't be right. There can be no doubt that the correct spelling is
"Christlicher Kinderfreund" (= Christian Friend of Children).
Obvioulsly, your book is an old German school book. Now that I have a
title, I will try to find out more.
One additional question: On the first page, together with the title,
is there a word that might be a place name? For example, "Halle",
"Berlin", "Leipzig", or the like? Or could you provide anything else
that's printed on the first page?
Regards,

Halle is listed on the front page of the book. Also, it is possible
that the name in the book is actually the owner of the book, and not
the author. It is believed Andreas Mortitz Andresen was executed in
Hamburg sometime between 1867 and 1869. Any info about Andresen's
life would be appreciated.

Dear thirteen,
I have, alas, bad news. Andreas Moritz Andresen was definitely not the
author of "Christlicher Kinderfreund - Lesebuch für Volksschulen",
published in Halle. That schoolbook was written by a certain F.Ä.B.
Westermeier. So Andresen must have been the owner.
If he was executed in Hamburg in 1868 or 1869, this could be found in
the municipal archives of the city of Hamburg (provided the files have
not been destroyed in World War II). But the archives charge high fees
for research, so I am not able to answer your question without making
a financial loss.
All I can do is giving you contact information for the Hamburg
archives, so you can request a search for A.M. Andresen in the files:
