I want a home bookshelf/compact stereo with cd (r/w optional),
minidisc and cassette. One compact unit with two speakers max, 50
watts or more, reviewed, and from a decent store. I'd pay $199-399 for
the right unit.

I've done a yahoo search (see url below) but can't find one in stock,
reviewed, and from a store with a decent reputation.

Well, nobody sent me an answer, so I guess maybe this doesn't exist.

Instead I bought a cd/minidisc system, and even those were hard to
find; I had to settle for a small jvc with only 17 watts per speaker:
