Are you looking for a traditional, classic chess game, or a
graphically-enhanced variety, such as Battlechess?

Hi Widetrack,

Why buy when you can download for free? Simply press the "Shift" key
before clicking on the link so it will open a new window or
right-click on the link and choose "Open in New Window" for your
convenience. Here's a site you need to try:

CNET Networks, Inc.
Chess Games for Windows 2000
Licenses:
Free
Free to try - but you can also buy
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0-1-0.html?qt=chess&author=&titlename=&desc=&dlcount=&daysback=&swlink=&os=114&li=&dlsize=&ca=

Search strategy:

Personal knowledge. Searched Download.com.com for "chess" and filtered
results for Win2K

I hope this helps you. Should you have any comments/questions, please
feel free to post your clarification before rating this and I'll
attend to you as soon as possible. Thanks for asking.

Regards,
Feilong

I would prefer the classical chess game such as Chessmaster (which
does not have a Windows 2000 version of its software)

Hi Widetrack,

You did not mention your preference when you posted your question. It
will help me if you'll be clear on the details. Please answer the
following:

1) Have you explored the link I gave you? Have you read the
descriptions of the links it contains?

2) Are you looking for a chess game software similar to Chessmaster
that will run in Windows 2000?

3) Do you have a preferred budget for this? What is your target price?

4) Do you have any additional info/descriptions that will aid my
search?

The best (as in strongest) Chess program is Fritz by Chessbase.
http://www.chessbase.com/
http://www.chessbase.com/shop/index.asp?cat=Fritz%20Programs

The price is reasonable (considering quality)
