andrewv.. Thanks for your question. The Earth spins at a rate of approximately 1000 miles per hour and orbits the sun at about 67,000 miles per hour or 29.78 kilometers per second. Meanwhile, the Sun is orbiting the centre of gravity of the galaxy at a rate half a million miles an hour or so, taking about 230 million years to go around once; and the whole galaxy, together with other members of the local group is heading towards Virgo at a rate of about a million miles an hour, and the whole Virgo; and the Virgo cluster of speeding towards the "great attractor". Also note, the 1000mph of the earth's rotation applies only at the equator. |
