Where can I fill a propane tank in Manhattan (NYC)?

Request for Question Clarification by surajambar-ga on 17 Mar 2003 12:55 PST
I have only been able to find places that exchange propane tanks. One
place I called explicitly said that no one in Manhattan fills. Would
a place where you can exchange an empty tank for a new one suffice?
If not, would a place that fills in Brooklyn (Red Hook) suffice?

I have a bbq grill with a propane tank that is an unusual size, so
exchanging tanks will not work for me. Also, Red Hook is a little too
far out of the way for me.

Hello jtj114,

I searched and I called for you on this interesting problem. The best
answer I found came from calling this dealer:

Mc Kinney Welding Supply CO Inc
535 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019
(212) 246-4305

He explained that there is no one in the 5 boroughs that refill
barbecue propane tanks, but exchange only. I explained it is a special
size and he said it can be dropped off, they will send it out to be
refilled and the process takes about 2 days.

I am amazed!

I called Weber Grills, I was so taken a back by this answer.
1-800-446-1071

They had never heard of there being a problem like this. They searched
Manhattan zip codes to find no service. Put me on hold to see what
they could find and came back to tell me that you have to go to New
Jersey! They no longer can even ship fire starter cubes or barbecue
lighters through the US Mail since 9-11 and New York does prohibit the
refilling of propane.

Do try McKinney. They may be your best bet.

Best regards,
