Question ID: 177510
I am looking for a service, based in the UK or worldwide, who would be
prepared to fax or email the following article to me:

Messner K, Gillquist J. Cartilage Repair: A critical review Acta
Orthopaedica Scandinavia 1996 Oct, 67(5) 523-9.

Please check with them to ensure that they are able to send this
specific article. If you find three such services and rank them by
cost, I will pay an additional $10 for this.

I forgot to mention, I am based in the UK hence they would have to fax
it to a UK number. Or email it. Or deliver it on paper (not ideal).

I also forgot to mention, that aceresearcher-ga has done this work
already (see my previous question) and perhaps he ought to get the
first chance to answer it.

Greetings, Victor!

First, I had to find the specific article to which you were referring.

The reason you were unable to find it is probably because the journal
name is actually "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica" <-- note the
spelling of the last word.

Search Strategy

I went to the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information)
home page (you will probably want to bookmark this site, if you have
not done so already):
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

I pulled down the menu after "Search" and selected "Journals", then
entered "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavia" and clicked "Go". This brought
up a page of search results, with "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica" as
the 3rd item listed.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=journals&cmd=search&term=Acta+Orthopaedica+Scandinavia+

I clicked on "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavia" and it brought up this
listing for
"1: Acta orthopaedica Scandinavica.
    pISSN: 0001-6470
    MEDLINE Abbr: Acta Orthop Scand
    Publication Start Year: 1930
    Publisher: Scandinavian University Press
    Language: eng
    Country: Norway
    NLM ID: 0370352"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=journals&list_uids=148&dopt=full

At the top of this page, I pulled down "PubMed" from the menu after
"Search" and entered "Cartilage Repair A critical review" (note: do
NOT use a colon [:] in your text string -- the search engine will
think that you are looking for a range and return an error message) in
the search text box after "for", and clicked "Go".

This brought up a search results page of articles; the one you are
looking for is listed at Item Number 17 on this page. I clicked on the
"Messner K, Gillquist J." hyperlink, and it brought me to the article
link page I gave you at the beginning of the Answer. This page also
includes a link to the page for the "comment" you are seeking.

Another way to find this article would be to go to the NCBI site
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
pull down "PubMed" after "Search", and enter
Messner[auth] AND Cartilage Repair
in the search text box after "for", then click "Go".

The Article, which is available through PubMed:
"Acta Orthop Scand. 1996 Oct;67(5):523-9.
Cartilage repair. A critical review.
Messner K, Gillquist J.
Department of Sports Medicine, Faculty of Health Sweden.
Publication Types:
 - Review
 - Review, Tutorial
PMID: 8948264 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=8948264&dopt=Abstract

The comment is also available through PubMed:
"Acta Orthop Scand 1997 Apr;68(2):186-91
A critical analysis of cartilage repair.
Brittberg M, Lindahl A, Homminga G, Nilsson A, Isaksson O, Peterson L.
Publication Types:
 - Comment
 - Letter
PMID: 9174462 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=9174462

Unfortunately, in order to obtain this article from PubMed, you need
to have access to a medical library near you. If you think you may
need to search for articles like this on a frequent basis, I recommend
that you start the process now of finding a medical library which will
provide documents from PubMed through Loansome Doc.
http://wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/loansome/loansome.cfm
where it says
"If you are new...
How to register if you are in:"
Since you are in the UK, pull down "Other countries" in which you are
located, and click "Go".

"PubMed users in any country can order copies of selected documents
from a health science library by using Loansome Doc. To order
documents, you need to register with a library that will provide the
copies. You will also need a Loansome Doc user ID and password which
you will create yourself when you register.

Setting Up a Loansome Doc Service Agreement

Contact a medical library in your country, or the one nearest your
area. There are many International health libraries that provide
document delivery to users in their countries and within their region
of the world. Many U.S. health libraries also serve international
users, as does CISTI, the Canada Institute for Scientific and
Technical Information. Once you have established a service agreement,
the library will give you the ordering library ID (LIBID) that
Loansome Doc uses to send your requests to that library.

Enter the Library Identifier (LIBID) of your Ordering Library :
(required)"

Now, since that isn't going to provide an immediate solution for you:

The Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica Journal is published by the Taylor
& Francis Group in the UK. I found this by entering
Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica
in the Google Search text box and clicking "I feel lucky".
http://lucia.ingentaselect.com/vl=989807/cl=58/nw=1/rpsv/cw/tandf/00016470/contp1.htm

This page contains a link to the Taylor & Francis Journals information
page, the hyperlink "Taylor & Francis Health Sciences" after the word
"Publisher:". Click on this link, then click on "Alphabetical Listing"
on the menu on the left-hand side. Scroll down the list on the
resulting page
to find:

"Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica
A Taylor & Francis Health Sciences Title
ISSN Print 0001-6470 ISSN Online 1651-1964
Volume 74, 2003, 6 issues per annum"

According to the little checkmark, this Journal is available online.

Click on "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica", then under the picture of
the journal, click on the box labeled "e-journal: Access the on-line
version".
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/online.html
On this page, click on the MetaPress hyperlink at the end of the
sentence "Most Taylor & Francis Group journals are available online at
http://taylorandfrancis.metapress.com ".

This opens up a new browser window containing the Search page
http://taylorandfrancis.metapress.com/app/home/main.asp

Enter "Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica" in the "Search for" box, make
sure the "Using" pull-down menu says "All Words", click the
"Publications" radio button, and click on "Search". This brings up a
page which lists the issues of the journal which are available
on-line:
http://taylorandfrancis.metapress.com/app/home/journal.asp?wasp=6804k1balhdyrlangadt&referrer=parent&backto=searchpublicationsresults,1,1

Bummer. The online issues only go back to February 2000.

Close this window, and go back to the window showing the page
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/online.html

Click on "Customer Services" in the menu on the left-hand side.
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/customer.html

Scroll down on this page to:
"Ordering:
- Subscriptions
- Single Issues - Customers requiring specific issues of our journals
should send their order, and payment to their nearest customer
services office or by email to journals.orders@tandf.co.uk.
Alternatively you can download the issue if the journal is available
online by clicking on the e-journal button beneath the journal cover
on it's home page. Please note that there is a charge for single
issues of journals which can be calculated by dividing the
institutional subscription rate by the frequency and adding 10%. For
customers interested in a sample copy of a journal to review, please
see below.
- Individual Articles"
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/customer.html

If you want, you can order the two issues which contain your articles
by following the instructions above, although this is a more expensive
option.

Or, you can click on the "Individual Articles" hyperlink to this page:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/individual.html

Here it says
"If the journal is not available online, the following resources may
be able to help you:
The US Library of Congress: http://lcweb.loc.gov/rr/
The British Library: http://www.bl.uk/services/bsds/dsc/lexformn.html

In addition, the following resources offer a document delivery service
and hold many of our journals:

CISTI www.nrc.ca/cisti/
ISI: www.isinet.com/
OCLC: www.oclc.org/
Uncover http://uncweb.carl.org/"

Unfortunately, the British Library link is outdated. The desired page
is now located at:
https://www.bl.uk/services/document/lexformr.html

I found this by going to the British Library Home Page
http://www.bl.uk
putting my mouse over "Services", placing the mouse over the sub-item
"Document Supply" and finally, clicking on "Document Supply Center".
http://www.bl.uk/services/document/dsc.html

Scroll down and click on the "Order documents online" hyperlink.
http://www.bl.uk/services/document/orddocs.html

Scroll down and click on "The LEXICON document order form" hyperlink.
"Lexicon Order Form
This is the online order form for the British Library's LEXICON
service. This form is principally for ordering single articles, but
you can use it for any LEXICON service. This is a premium service -
please check prices (UK& Ireland, International or US) and copyright
fees before ordering. If you need help completing this form, please
read these instructions."
https://www.bl.uk/services/document/lexformr.html

Click on the hyperlinked "UK and Ireland" text in the paragraph quoted
above to see prices.

Now, go back to the Taylor and Francis "Customer Services" page:
"CISTI www.nrc.ca/cisti/
ISI: www.isinet.com/ <---
OCLC: www.oclc.org/
Uncover http://uncweb.carl.org/
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/individual.html

If you click on the ISI link, then click on "Europe, the Middle East &
Africa" on the menu on the left-hand side of their home page, you get
the following information:

Europe, Middle East & Africa
ISI
"14 Great Queen Street,
London WC2B 5DF
United Kingdom
Phone: +44-(0)20-7344-2800
Fax: +44-(0)20-7344-2830
e-mail: uksales@isinet.co.uk"
http://www.isinet.com/isi/contact/index.html

TO SUMMARIZE, You can obtain these articles by ordering:
1) the articles through PubMed, Loansome Doc, and your local medical
library
2) the journals containing the documents from Taylor & Francis
3) the articles through the British Library
4) the articles through ISI

The articles you seek are #1 and #5; click the little checkmark box in
front of both of these, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click
"Add Selected Items to Cart" or "Add Selected Items and Checkout". If
you have problems getting either of these links to work, as I did, you
can click on the hyperlink for each of these two documents and click
"Place In Cart", which worked for me.

Best wishes!

Victor,

I meant to mention that I have not ranked by cost the options I
provided you, because I am in the U.S., and finding out the cost would
have required
1) entering my credit card number with a false address (which would
not be accepted), or
2) making international phone calls.

In addition, the costs with each service vary depending on the
delivery method you choose (fax, e-mail, snail mail, Fed Ex).

However, if you go through the ordering process for each one, you will
be able to determine the cost (and the delivery method and the length
of time for delivery) BEFORE you actually commit to the purchase; THEN
you can decide which service you prefer to use.

Thanks for the additional information about Infotrieve, which is worth
a $5 tip to me. However I have no idea how to send you this tip. How
can I do so?

Clarification of Answer by aceresearcher-ga on 18 Mar 2003 14:20 PST
Thanks, victor!

The tip function is only available at the time the Question is rated.
Once a Question has been rated, no tip can be added.

However, if you wish, you may post an additional Question entitled
"For aceresearcher-ga", for $2.00. When I "Answer" it, you can rate it
and add a $3.00 tip. (Researchers get 75% of the Question price, but
100% of the tip; in this case, I would get $1.50 + 3.00).

Again, I hope that my information enabled you to get exactly what you
needed, and that you will use Google Answers to meet your research
needs in the future!

Good answer. You did find a service that would deliver stuff to me
electronically. I didn't really wish to wade through all the stuff
about Pubmed, which I already knew & in fact I found the article using
Pubmed, and I had already searched the publisher's site, but you did
not know that. The British Library site does exactly what I want, but
at a high cost of about £25 for the article. Since the British
Library is one mile from my office, and since the Cambridge University
medical library to which I have access is half a mile from my home,
I'll probably just bite the bullet and go in.
