A search for some background information on Krugerrands (double r seems to be the correct spelling?) found http://www.investgold.co.za/krugerrands/krugerrands_info.htm and the statement that they are usually traded for a small premium above the value of their gold content. Therefore, I hope that being able to provide a value for the price of gold at the time specified will answer your question. A historical gold chart is available at www.kitco.com (right hand panel). (This site was linked from http://www.investgold.co.za/krugerrands/gold_info_nav_page.htm.) It provides a closing price in New York on the day specified of $318.00 per ounce. So your Krugerrand would have had a value around this area. (For instance, today's Krugerrand selling price is about $5.00 per ounce higher than the raw gold price: https://online.kitco.com/sellprice/selling.html. But the buying price at www.kitco.com is about $7.00 below the raw price.) Historical silver prices are also available at Kitco, and on Nov 4 2002 the price of silver closed at $4.48 per ounce. Again, the value of your 100 oz bars is only slightly higher than the value of the silver they contain, that is, slightly more than $448 per bar. As a rule of thumb, the premium for these silver bars seems to be about $20 per bar. |
