Please provide me with 5 interesting and unique websites. Consider
that I am not looking for websites I would come across in the usual
day-to-day activities of life such as news, weather, sports. I do
not want this to be someone else's list --- but your own personal
Google Researcher list. Basically, I would like the list to be one
to broaden my view of the internet and, when I go to the site, will
say to myself --- wow, I should have known about this!! Thank you!!

Hi there,

Here's more than five, in case you have already seen some before:

AnyBirthday
http//www.anybirthday.com

A unique site - it has a database containing the birthdays of most
adult Americans. Their paid service is awesome for adoptees - enter a
first name and birth date, and it returns where they live.

Terraserver
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/

High resolution satellite photos of the USA, for free. Get an aerial
view of where you live.

Half Bakery
http://www.halfbakery.com/

"The Halfbakery is a communal database of original, fictitious
inventions, edited by its users. It was created by people who like to
speculate, both as a form of satire and as a form of creative
expression."

Anomalies Unlimited
http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/

A fun site covering a lot of conspiracy theories, and wacky stuff like
Michael Jacksons face, rude images in Disney cartoons and the Shroud
of Turin.

Gas Price Watch
http://www.gaspricewatch.com/

"We monitor gas prices across the country so you can get the best deal
in your area. Search our database to find the lowest gas prices in
your area."

The Onion
http://www.theonion.com

Funny newspaper.

Landover Baptist
http://www.landoverbaptist.org/

The Onion of religious sites.

Singing Fish
http://www.singingfish.com

Not many people have heard of it yet, but this is easily the best way
to find streaming media.

The End of the Internet
http://www.shibumi.org/eoti.htm

Exactly as it says.

Family Search
http://www.familysearch.org

The Mormons have put their genealogical database online for anyone to
use.

Obsolete Computer Museum
http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org

Anyone who likes telling friends how their first computer only had 1K
of RAM will dig this archive of memorabilia.

In addition to the rating may I add my thanks to robertskelton-ga and
voila-ga! Between the two of you I got more than expected PLUS from
voila-ga I learned WHY my questions were always getting locked from
the start! Suggestion: G A should have a way to allow tipping for
comments from researchers other than the one who answers the question.
That way I could have rewarded voila-ga for nice work!

I was working on your question but lost my lock trying to multitask
when my head exploded. Here's my answer also.

*************

Hello Seattle!

I've had my eye on your question since last night but it was just late
this morning when Google Answers released it for the researchers. You
see,
anytime someone mentions the word "Google" in their question, it's
automatically locked until the editors have had a chance to review it.
I apologize for any inconvenient delay in the answering of your
question.

So, you'd like some WOW websites? Surfing the web is a hobby of mine
so I have quite a collection -- over 10,000, I'm sure -- so it's no
mean feat to select just 5 but I'll try.

May I preface this to say that Google Answers is always my first stop
in the morning (the pay me to say that), plus it's so doggone much fun
with great community spirit. Since you're here, I'm sure you know
that
already.

1. http://home.mira.net/~lions/anew.htm

For the gift that keeps on giving, here's "Beyond BlackStump," an
Australian website that you can subscribe to. Every day or so they'll
do all the surfing for you and deliver a new list of dynamite sites to
investigate. I must admit that I've bookmarked most of my favorites
through BlackStump. They're a tad skewed to Australia but there's at
all
nothing wrong with Aussie pride. Hope to visit someday.

If you check in the top right hand corner, you can also click on
"Pirate Pete" and get additional websites of interest. There is an
archive of sites that dates back to 1995. While you're in the Pirate
Pete zone, in the top right hand corner again, click on "Bizarro"
if you have a bent toward strangeness.

2. http://www.searchlores.org

Since you're still exploring the web, I would have to nominate
"Fravia" for the sheer volume of knowledge contained therein. Click
on any link and you'll be amazed at labyrinth of information. I try
to read at least one page of text every couple days just to learn
something new. And it's constantly being updated! There's many a
good tip for any novice researchers.

3. http://www.metafilter.com

"Metafilter" is a moderated weblog community of over 17,000 members
who
people add links of interest for discussion. There's any topic from
silliness to sainthood and it's great fun. I've never managed to get
through the registration process but it's quite interesting just to
lurk. I first learned of Google Answers through Metafilter, so I'm
kind of partial to these guys.

4. http://vos.ucsb.edu

"Voice of the Shuttle" has just about everything under the sun on
humanities with lots of nooks and crannies. It would take me months
to look at each link posted at VOS. You will run into a broken link
or
two but it's definitely worth a look.

5. http://www.zeal.com

The "Zeal" community is coming along quite nicely. It's a directory
of websites that are personally reviewed by editors according their
usefulness. They're arranged under various headings and then under
subcategories with a caption review summary. I'm sure you'll find
something to your liking there.

So, those are my 5, Seattle. If you've seen any of these already or
they lack in the WOW department, please post me a clarification. I
can add five new links until you're completely satisfied and it would
be great fun to share my finds with you and the community.

Cheers,
V

Seattle,

voila-ga is a pretty neat gal; thank you for wanting to take care of
her!

You can reward Researcher voila-ga by posting a $2.00 Question
entitled "Just for Researcher voila-ga" and telling her to post her
"Answer". Then, when you rate the Question, just add on whatever
additional you would like to tip her (Researchers get 75% of the
Question fee, but 100% of the tip).

Regards,

The site I visit most often for a combination of education and
entertainment is MemePool. Each day, MemePool's regular contributors
list oddities and curiosities that they've found on the Web. You'll
find everything from "The Kama Sutra of Pooh" to a site describing a
robot that searches for meteorites in Antarctica. This is a
treasure-trove:
