Hello Onward,

I assembled a digest of links to statistics and forecasts for consumer
broadband penetration in Europe. I highly recommend that you open each
link in order to view the many graphs that are included.

Scott Robinson, Director of Marketing of the Carrier Networking Group
which includes information and graphs about Broadband penetration in
Europe.

“Jupiter MMXI predicts only 14 percent of European households will be
using broadband by 2005. Jupiter MMXI forecasts that the adoption of
broadband will be slow across Europe.”

“Among the reasons for the sluggish adoption: the lack of competition
across, low customer demand and, of course, the high price of the
technology.”

“Jupiter MMXI also predicts that the Nordic regions, which has the
highest Internet penetration in Europe, will adopt broadband the
fastest. Thirty percent of the households in Sweden, Finland, Norway
and Denmark will be using broadband by 2005. Germany and Britain are
expected to develop more slowly; Germany will have 17 percent, and
Britain will have 15 percent of households with a broadband connection
at the end of 2005. France, Italy and Spain are expected to have about
10 percent of households accessing broadband by then.”

“Broadband Internet access is being adopted so slowly that GartnerG2
predicts only 10 percent of the households in France, Germany and
Britain will have broadband access by 2006. Simply put, the study
found consumers are not prepared to pay a premium for broadband.”

GartnerG2's study found that broadband penetration is lowest in
countries where the price is highest.

The development of the European broadband market will be an issue
worth watching in 2002. Belgium (12 percent) and Sweden (18 percent)
currently lead the way with the highest proportion of homes in Europe
with broadband connections, according to Jupiter MMXI.

Britain and Italy are expected to see the most growth in the number of
broadband households during 2002, with each country experiencing a
threefold increase by the end of the year. Despite this, Jupiter MMXI
does not expect broadband penetration in Europe to reach critical mass
(15 percent) until 2006.
