Hello toshie:

Thanks for the fascinating question.

I was able to find the exact times for you by first finding the very
handy sunrise/sunset calculator at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Sun or Moon Rise/Set Table for One Year
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html

I then used "Form B - Locations Worldwide" section to enter the
longitude and latitude for Edinburgh, Scotland. I found those figures
at:

Latitude and Longitude of World Cities
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0001769.html

The resulting table for 1927 can be found at by substituting the
values:

Year: 1927
Longitude: west 3 degrees 10 minutes
Latitude: north 55 degrees 55 minutes

and clicking "Compute Table".

The values for mid-June are:

Date: Sunrise Sunset
June 14 0327 2059
June 15 0326 2059
June 16 0326 2100
June 17 0326 2101
June 18 0326 2101

I hope this information helps with your research.

Dear Toshie,

Websearcher has sensibly quoted the answers in Universal Time, which -
being the same as Greenwich Mean Time - is appropriate for the time
zone of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. But you should note that in June
1927, the UK would have been using British Summer Time, which is one
hour ahead of GMT. You can confirm this from the National Physical
Laboratory's summer time archive at

http://www.npl.co.uk/time/summer_time_archive.html

So at 0326 GMT, Edinburgh's clocks would have read 0426, and at 2100
GMT they would have read 2200.

I trust this helps.

The sunrise and sunset should be the same plus or minus a minute or
two for June 2003. The exact time shifts a little due to some years
being leap year, but it should repeat the patern quite closely. If
not, you should find the reason for any significant discrepency.
