Question ID: 178303
I am doing some research on European cable TV operators and am running
into some language difficulties with Portugal.

The questions I need to answer pertain to the two main cable TV
operators in Portugal - TV Cabo and Cabovisao. In particular, I need
to know:

 - What are the most popular (i.e. best performing) channels for each
of these two operators.
 - I need to be able to back this up with some kind of official data
(such as a ratings/market share organisation a la Nielsen from the
US).
 - Separately, what are the organisations that track this sort of
market/audience share data for TV in Portugal - with some basic
contact details.
 - I am also interested in audience share data for TV channels in
Portugal generally - be that derived from the broadcaster themselves
(e.g. RTP or SIC), the cable operators or from other available
articles or reports.

Thanks anyone!

Cheers....Dysan

Hello dysan99-ga.

I have found a data-rich source of information on pay TV services in
Portugal. The report is in English, was published in 2000, and has a
great deal of info including:  the most popular cable service (Cabo);
the top 10 channels (Eurosport is number 4, for instance); description
of the cable services offered and price for basic and premuim
packages; technical descriptions of tv service in Portugal;
demographic data on number of homes with TVs, number of homes with
cable, etc.

HOWEVER, very little of the information is subdivided between
companies -- that is, you can't break out the data between Cabo and
other services, for instance (although the report treats Cabo as the
largest, seemingly by far).

And again, the report is from 2000, and contains mostly 1999 info,
with some 2000 info as well.

Shall I post it as an answer?

Hi Pafalafa,

Thanks for the input. I think that perhaps you mean an EU document
written in 2000. I have seen this but really the data I need needs to
be more current. I'm looking for something based hopefully on 2002
figures or 1999 figures at the latest. Thanks!

Sorry, that last should read 2001 data at oldest. Ooops!

Just alittle more clarification. Sorry, I gues we're working in two
different time zones here!

My primary interest is not the Pay TV itself but rather the popularity
of the channels that the cable operators air - i.e. from an
advertising perspective essentially.

The EU iDATE report I think you're refering (and in part. it's Top 10
channels) is three years old and I think that the market changes
hugely in this time.

I was hoping that perhaps the data I sought was out there but as I
don't speak Portuguese I was missing it.

From my understanbding I think the TV audience share company is called
Marktest (not sure about the spelling).

Thanks again

Thanks for the clarification -- it's a big help. I'll keep looking
for whatever data is out there, but if you have a few thousand bucks
to spend, it looks like you can purchase country-specific info from
Eurodata TV at:

http://www.mediametrie.fr/world/produits/contrysub.html

"Every month, Eurodata TV delivers the complete information available
program by program: « local title, starting time, duration average
audience and market share » for each standard demo. Based on each
country, the selection may retrieve one particular genre or channel.
Subscription includes the delivery of universes updates and monthly
market shares of the channels in each country. The subscription
service covers the main national channels in each country."
